Rather different gamebook concept « Thread Started on Jul 1, 2004, 3:40am »
Just a peculiar idea that came to me early this morning. (There's already more to it than this, but I think this stands fairly well on its own.)
The Story So Far...
It is the year MS5084. Nine years have passed since the demise of your masters, the Darklords of Helgedad, at the hands of Lone Wolf, Kai Lord of Sommerlund. In those nine years, the minions of the Dark God Naar have hoarded their strength, biding their time and making plans for revenge.
You are not part of those plans.
In the Darkland city of Kaag, a civil war rages about you, a war to which you are all but oblivious. Nominally assigned to a watch unit in the service of the long-dead Darklord Zagarna, you stay alive by never showing up for patrols--or for meals, either, since your Giak brethren would eat you as soon as look at you. Neither act particularly appeals to them, and you like it that way. You are the most contemptible runt of your spawning batch, a despicable sneak so useless that you aren't even an asset to the enemy. If you were the last agent of darkness on Magnamund, the dark powers could be expected to surrender before ever giving you a task.
But Evil works in devious ways. Naar is dismayed by the ability of Lone Wolf to penetrate every defence, alone, and defeat his most powerful minions, even on the very Plane of Darkness--and now, the Supreme Master of the Kai has trained a New Order of Kai warriors, sharing his ability to triumph against overwhelming odds. So the Dark God has devised a new scheme. He has set aside his vast armies and fell commanders. He has dismissed his Demonlords and Deathlords from his counsels. He has thrown out his mighty weapons and foul contraptions. He has quite taken leave of his wits, and he has sent for you.
Late one night, he comes to you in a vision and reveals his plan. In imitation of the feats of the Kai, he will send a single agent into the very heart of the enemy stronghold, the Kai Monastery in Sommerlund. At the worst possible time, with a staggering lack of preparation and forethought, and with no advantageous equipment--in short, against utterly impossible odds--Naar's lowliest minion will enact his revenge. That minion is you--you are now the Lone Giak!

Just tweaked some of the names of the following, so I'm ready to post this now. Enjoy.
Survival Traits Over the years, simply keeping alive on the streets of Kaag has taken some unusual skills on your part. You have demonstrated four of the following traits. Not quite worthy of being called qualities, they will nevertheless help prolong your existence if used at the right time.
Unlucky Ill fortune seems to follow you everywhere. Fortunately this afflicts those around you at least as often as it does you.
If you choose this trait, write 'Unlucky' on your Action Chart.
Good Runner You may not be able to hold your own in a fight, but you sure know how to haul it out of there. When fleeing a fight, you do not take any damage from the enemy.
If you choose this trait, write 'Good Runner: no damage taken when fleeing combat' on your Action Chart.
Paranoid You always think someone's watching you, and frequently give yourself panic attacks as a result. It's not good for your health. On the upside, if anyone ever actually does sneak up on you, you'll be ready for them, though you may have a minor fit in the process.
If you choose this trait, write 'Paranoid' on your Action Chart.
Stupid Your mind shares many qualities with sun-baked mud. This gives you resistance to psychic attacks and charms, as your enemies struggle to find anything to manipulate.
If you choose this trait, write 'Stupid' on your Action Chart.
Screamer You scream like a girl any time you're forced to fight. This is terribly off-putting to those around you. Even warriors hardened to the sounds of blood-curdling battle cries will be repulsed by your high-pitched wailing, granting you 2 points to your COMBAT SKILL. You will be told if an opponent is immune.
If you choose this trait, write 'Screamer: +2 COMBAT SKILL points' on your Action Chart.
Lacks Sense You just don't have the wits to be sensible, cautious or even afraid. Some might mistake this for courage. It's not, but it all works out much the same in the end.
If you choose this trait, write 'Lacks Sense' on your Action Chart.
Idle Hands You're not the only Giak to slack off in basic weapons training, but you're so ornery that you actually went out and studied a weapon no lowly patroller will ever be equipped with. Choose one weapon from the following list. If you actually manage to obtain your chosen weapon, you add 2 points to your COMBAT SKILL when you enter combat wielding it.
The fact that you are skilled in a weapon does not mean that you set out carrying that particular weapon. Indeed, if you were ever caught with one of the weapons on this list, it would obviously have been stolen from one of the better-equipped units and you would be killed on the spot.
* Broadsword * Bow * Mace * Sword * Warhammer
If you choose this trait, write 'Idle Hands +2 COMBAT SKILL points if _______ wielded' on your Action Chart.
Trafficker You have an extensive practical knowledge of the names, benefits, risks, and street values of many common "enhancing" substances you may find as leaves, roots, seeds, powders, potions, liquors...
If you choose this trait, write 'Trafficker' on your Action Chart.
Light-fingered Near those who have this skill, small objects start to move entirely of their own accord. Locks tend to abruptly cease being locked, money magically spends itself, and little birds fly away with anything remotely valuable. And somehow, you mysteriously find things appearing in your pockets...
If you choose this trait, write 'Light-fingered' on your Action Chart.
Ignored Those around you tend to overlook you, and you know a few tricks to help them do it. You've learnt the hard way how not to be obvious when avoiding notice, and this helps you blend in. Even animals tend to ignore your presence.
If you choose this trait, write 'Ignored' on your Action Chart.

Incidentally, the word is "imbecile". Another is that "inept" is only an adjective and can't be a noun Instead of "Giak Master Coward", how about "Giak Proven Coward"? Even "Master Coward" sounds vaguely impressive...

Now, does this really look like the face of a cold-blooded, bird-devouring murderer to you?

If adept can be a noun, then inept can be a noun. Blame WotC.
Actually, that may go back even further. I thought 'inept' was a nice joke of a way to contrast 'adept', but when when Magic the Gathering was only a few months old, I was playing the second edition of a previously established game by FASA called Shadowrun, in which I ran a Physical Adept. . . I still like inept/adept, great list!
