I thought it would be neat to see what other hard-core Lone Wolf fans rated as the best book in each part of the series. Which is your favorite?

I don't know why, but something about a frozen wasteland that supports creatures whose fat can warm your body appeals to me.

I don't know why, but something about a frozen wasteland that supports creatures whose fat can warm your body appeals to me. Yeah, I feel the same way. Totally OT: but that episode of the X-Files were Mulder and Scully are stuck in that arctic base with the worm things was one of the freakiest episodes when it first aired. IMO, that desolate feeling of being stuck in an arctic wasteland is pretty cool. I had a hard time voting on this one. Out of the entire Lone Wolf series, these five hold the greatest memories for me (maybe because I also played them the most). I have to say though, out of the five, I felt book 4 was the weakest (in my opinion).

This was a tough one. I think all the Kai series books are very enjoyable in their own ways. Like, the first is the least linear of the entire series (which rules), FotW is probably the most challenging, Kalte has the best environment, Chasm has LW's first land battle, and SotS is huge and exciting.
I went with Shadow on the Sand because I love that first half of it. It's cool how there's a way to get *almost* all the way through the sewers yet still be caught by Raouk and then have to escape the palace.

Well, maybe it's a case of nostalgia (as it was my first Lone Wolf book), but I enjoyed The Chasm of Doom the most! The atmosphere and setting were great, and the battle of Ruanon was exciting. (First chance to shoot a bow in the whole series! That has to be worth something! ) And it was fun to be hunted by the bandits and to sneak through their lines. Just a shame that the end seems somewhat ... hurried. Compared to the other books of the series, The Caverns of Kalte tend to leave me somewhat, err, cold. Don't get me wrong, it does have its moments, Loi-Kymar for example! (Or the Silver Helmet ...) And Vonotar had it coming, too. But that's about it for me ... The next best would be a toss-up between books 1, 2 and 5 - I just love that escape on the Itikar's back! And I mourn its death every time. Good thing Banedon's there to offer comfort to a friend! (Did I just say that? A Wytch-King may not admit to softness; at least that's what the manual says. Therefore consider yourself under a spell of forgetfulness as of now! ) The Wytch-King, busily deducting WILLPOWER points

Flight from the Dark gets my vote, simply for the Graveyard path. That creeped me out when I was (a lot) younger.

Shadow on the Sand, easily my first choice. Great cover art (from the Berkley edition), a superb storyline, a great feel of culture and consistency... Plus a chance to fight a Darklord! Easily my favorite.
Second would be Chasm of Doom, as averting disaster by preventing Vashna's return is almost as satisfying as defeating a Darklord directly.
Third choice is Fire of the Water, then Caverns of Kalte (I HATE getting cold!). My least favorite (though I still love it) is Flight from the Dark. It seems the most 'random' of all the books, and blind decisions that depend mostly on chance (I know Lone Wolf's only a beginner here, but that's the feel I got from the book).

Good call, Nerethel. I had the Berkley/Pacer version originally as well, and the shot of Lone Wolf striking down the Vordak from atop the Itikar with the flaming Sommerswerd was definitely one of the best covers in the whole series! The U.K. ones are cool too, because they show a picture of Haakon. I also love the whole chase first, quest later set-up, and especially the almost anti-climactic ending being cut short when Lone Wolf is unable to release a bolt of energy to vaporize Haakon because the Sommerswerd is underground, so you have to fight him instead. My vote without question. I also always enjoy having Banedon along.

FFtD is my favorite simply because it is less linear than the rest. You can make it to the end very quickly, or you can spend forever exploring every little path.

*looks at username*...
My favorite of those is Book 5. My least favorite is probably Book 2, because of its extreme linearity...although it has a really good ending...

I liked book 5 because of the final battle... which just pushes it above the Caverns of Kalte, which is my second favorite.

You always tend to show up at the most unexpected moments and at the most unlikely (well, not this time) places, eh? Well, we're used to that ... Welcome again!

So, um, do you know me from someplace? PureZC? Armageddon? Acmlm's? Are those code-names the mages of Toran use for the Temple of Raumas, the Sky-Rider and Kaag? Err, no, not really. Just couldn't resist that little in-game joke ... Sorry for the confusion, I'll behave now.

Caverns of Kalte was the first book my s.o. got me to read so it's my favourite.
