In a fit of nostalgia, let's all post our favorite useless or worse item in the LW series! By "worse," I mean an item that actually harms you in the long run, of which the best example might be the Cess. So, yeah, let's all go crazy!
Oh, and I'm aware the Scroll helps you get a little bit of extra information. I just don't think it's worth carrying, to be honest.

The Stone Dagger from Mydnight's Hero. I played through it (very quickly) the other night making notes for a guy on the forum, and I was executed because I was carrying it

I think the Black Crystal Cube rules all of the above. I mean... you actually get to lug it around for a very long time before it blows up on you! It's the ultimate 'death to pack-rats' item!

I can't believe I forgot about the Black Crystal Cube! That thing exploded while I was carrying it. pwned.

To get a Cess, teach the brat a lesson. Where'd the jar of berries come from?

The Jar of Black Berries comes, I believe, from Mogaruith, in that herb closet. It allegedly helps Brotherhood magicians cast spells, but I don't think you ever use it. I might be wrong though.

As far as 'worst item' goes, I have two contenders from the early days. One are the papers of authorization for your mission in Fire on the Water, which turn out to be fake (you need a certain Discipline to get them). The other is the Glowing Crystal from Caverns of Kalte. For 'most useless item', I vote for the Hourglass. Like the Brass Wistle, there are several of these to be found throughout the series, and they are completely useless I think it would be cool if the last challenge of Book 20, required you to have found all the Hourglasses in the entire series. I can think of two straight off - anyone know if there are more of these treasures to be found? www.projectaon.org/xhtml/lw/04tcod/sect213.htmwww.projectaon.org/xhtml/lw/15tdc/sect96.htm

Oh, and the Glowing Crystal/Doomstone was one of the original items I was thinking of; for some reason I replaced it with Gwynian's Scroll.

Yeah, the Brass Whistle/Hourglass/Bottle of Water or Wine axis seems pretty prolific in Magnamund. At least there is a use for the Water/Wine. There are quite a plethora of useless items close to the beginning of LW9, some of which you can obtain by winnning the Anarian gamble, others by visiting Sidara. And I remember winning a Silver Box from Count Conundrum in LW8, which is supposed to be worth a load of money, but which never gets offered as a bribe opportunity or anything. *grumble*

I also forgot about all those items in LW9, like the Scroll of Honor and the Vial of Gold Dust. Yeah, those would qualify.

There's at least one guy who buys Special Items from you for about two gold crowns per item. Nothing to sneeze at! ;D The Wytch-King, whose holds are burstin' with swag-- Darn. Mongoose's fault; want to be a Buccaneer of Shadaki!

Nothing to sneeze at! ;D Fair point, seeing as I generally use a diamond worth thousands of crowns to buy someone's horse, and then still have to offer him a second item (hey, take my Jewelled Mace while you're at it). All in all, it's a pretty good day's work for Altan. And it alleviates my guilt for using Psi-Surge on him. ;D

@ Cadak: Uh, I'm afraid I'd have to research that ... I seem to recall that I met him some time ago, so it must have been ... err ... somewhere between books 1 and 7 ... Help, anyone? That Count must have some mean streak. (Yeah. Bite your head off, man.) The Wytch-King
