The only thing that ever bothered me about Lone Wolf was that combats were either too easy or too hard. There was rarely that beautiful medium where you're fairly sure you can win a fight, but you take enough damage to feel like you've been in danger.

. . . which I think is in response to reader-feedback of Lone Wolf "fans" (a small hardcore elite of munchkins) who complained to Joe via the LWC that the Lone Wolf books were too easy (round about the release of Books 4, 5, 6). So Dever responded to the "fans", giving them what they wanted . . . and in turn, slightly alienated people who enjoy the storylines more than stupidly unfair combats. Fans just don't know what they want.

Well, the only thing I really disagreed with on how he did it was the Sommerswerd. Next time through the books, I'm going to "level it up," starting with only the undead bonus and a +1 to CS score. The bonus is that it will end up gaining more power than the previous incantation, but it will make the fights in the kai series less... slaughter-like...
I'm also a fan of the Choose Your Own Series despite usual sophmoric writing and some of the worst endings, I'm talking endings that aren't even endings. Like:
"You decide to go down the river to the left. Halfway down your boat this path your boat becomes stuck. You realize you'll have to turn around and take the other path. It may take you all day. THE END."
What do you mean the end? How does that make the adventure over? I just don't understand...
But I always appreciated the vast differences in the adventures you can have.

I'm sure if Joe had any idea that there would be 20+ books in the series, he would have either downgraded the sommerswerd or make it so that it's power grew as you learned to use it better...but he probably thought that the players would be getting it near to the conclusion of the series

Not true! Joe has said in numerous interviews that he had the first 13 books planned out before publishing even began.

I always thought of the Sommerswerd as a compensation for puberty. When the books start LW is, what a 15 YO or something. Yet despite obviously getting older his base scores don't change. He gets more CS from the various skills he practises and the Disciplines he works at all the time but his base score doesn't change till after he wipes out the darklords, and then only if you start new from Book 13 or so.
Don't know about you guys but I am pretty sure at 34 I can take on most 15 year olds for strength and stamina.

One of the things I always loved about the LW books was that I always felt like I had a fair chance of making it through the book my first time reading it. I never felt like the book was impossible, except for maybe a couple of oft-mentioned fights, and they painted such great pictures in my head as I read. I really like that idea, I remember thinking that when I read it before, either by you or Omega Flare X. I'll probably do that next time as well.

I have like, two of the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books, but the only ones I have ever heard of really, are the CYOA books, Way of The Tiger (Awesome book - my friend had one - and I wish I could find them again, the Golden Dragon Fantasy Gamebooks (I have #1, pretty neat.). That's all.

I agree... the combats are sometimes too darned easy, and I think Joe shoulda made 'em tougher. No offense Joe, I mean, I love the combat system and all, but....

As much as the Sommerswerd was a bit too much, the healing factor is what seems to make most wounds rather one-sided. Has anyone tried limiting the healing ability to a max/book like the New Order does? It seems that would make the fights, as well as injuries, a little more interesting over time.

Here's an idea. For the Sommerswerd.... pick a number from the RNT, and that is the CS score you add to your CS when fighting a zombie/helghasts, etc

Need to get a project-whatever for those Golden Dragon Fantasy Gamebooks... as they will never be reprinted. Fighting Fantasy seems to be going along well enough. They have reprinted all of Ian Livingstone and Steve Jacksons works. They are finally branching out into other authors with Sword of the Samuri and Talisman of Death (both by Mark Smith & Jamie Thomson). Choose Your Own Adventure is being reprinted: www.cyoa.com/1 The Abominable Snowman -- R.A. Montgomery 2 Journey Under The Sea -- R.A. Montgomery 3 Space And Beyond -- R.A. Montgomery 4 The Lost Jewels of Nafouti -- R.A. Montgomery 5 Mystery of the Maya -- R.A. Montgomery 6 House Of Danger -- R.A. Montgomery 7 The Race Forever -- R.A. Montgomery 8 Escape -- R.A. Montgomery 9 Lost On The Amazon -- R.A. Montgomery 10 Prisoner Of The Ant People -- R.A. Montgomery 11 Trouble On Planet Earth -- R.A. Montgomery 12 War With The Evil Power Master -- R.A. Montgomery 13 The Mystery Of Ura Senke -- Shannon Gilligan 14 The Case Of The Silk King -- Shannon Gilligan 15 Beyond Escape! -- R.A. Montgomery 16 Secret Of The Ninja -- Jay Leibold 17 The Brilliant Dr. Wogan -- R.A. Montgomery 18 Return To Atlantis -- R.A. Montgomery All on sale now I believe. There were an insane 184 books in the original series, and numerous sub-series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choose_Your_Own_Adventure

Anyone else spot the font used in the links toward the bottom of the CYOA page? It looks like Souvenir to me . . .
