It feels like it's time to announce this here as well, so here goes: Hyena is an audiogame player for the DS and PSP (well, soon anyway). There is also a PC reference version. Inspired by the AudioBooks, Hyena allows game-books to be played with only sound and just one button. This makes it possible to play games while your body is occupied with other things, like driving or out running (or while sitting in class ). Hyena is bundled with Lone Wolf - Flight From The Dark, by Joe Dever and Gary Chalk and with speech synthesis generated by NeoSpeech Homepage and downloads at: www.collectingsmiles.com/hyena

One more thing. I'd love some help implementing the rest of the books. As long as you know a tiny bit of programming, you can help out with this. Send me an e-mail at jens@collectingsmiles.com if you are interested in helping out.

That seriously sounds cool. There's just ONE big question that I have: do you have the authorizations of JD and/or PA?

Actually, no. I was in contact with Project Aon some time ago regarding that, and we breifly talked about hosting it here to comply with the license. The problem is that I haven't gotten any response to the last few mails and that is one of the reasons I'm posting here. I'd love some help in that area.

I'd be especially interested to hear how it pronounces the various names of people/places/things...

Well, I can assure you now that Jon Blake knows about it. He will probably be in touch with you to work this out.

Thanks. I'd be especially interested to hear how it pronounces the various names of people/places/things... Well, obviously not that well. I'm not an expert on the SAPI sdk that I use, but I think it's possible to add pronunciation information for new words. Also, while the voice I use is of great quality, it's about two years old and I've heard even better voices out there. I haven't been able to get hold of one those that I can use though. On the other hand, if someone with a nice voice wants to record 1275 lines of dialogue, that would obviously be the best.

I have requested an account for you from Jon Blake. On the basis that you are simply awaiting this account, all you need to do is point people to the Aon license BEFORE they download/install/run the software (any of these is fine) Once you have the account, you will need to host it soley there, but will still need to make the license readily available to your readers. I tried this out on the PC version recently, and it was rather good I couldn't quite get to grips with the "click 4 times" thing, so ended up clicking on the dice each time. Things like combat are very simply & cleverly implemented. The voice is not great, as you say, so that would put me off a prolonged playtest, but I am sure you will get some volunteers here. We now have something like 4/5 book interpretation projects on the go in various forms. The furthest on is at book 3. What I think we need to do is work out a common file format for the navigation rules, then each of us programmers will only need to add the "special" rules as and when they crop up (but we could keep a common list of those too to help!) - This would get the books out much faster as we could each focus on one each - I'll raise another thread for that later. Keep up the good work James

Are you still working on this project? Yes. I've just started to revive the project and I intend for an updated version to be released within a few weeks, mainly targeting blind players. I'll make sure to post additional information here as soon as I have it.

Jens, I haven't seen this in action, just listened to snippets of the podcast review, but it sounds like great work! There could be a lot of interest for this in some associations dealing with disability. Recently I read a notice of an ex student of my collage, Kyle Boyd, who created a website - www.disabilityheroes.com/. He won the newly introduced digital media category 25K award. With the proper permission I'm sure it would be great to distribute from relevant websites making it widely available to the blind. Perhaps you have considered all this but I just wanted to encourage you. Very worthwhile project.

I believe distribution can only be done from the Aon site due to licensing restrictions, but the other sites will be very welcome to link to the file on the AON site as long as it is appropriately documented.
