'Jungle Of Horrors' is my best book of the entire series. There's just something about the barge scene that just does it for me. Worst? 'The Cauldron Of Fear' or 'Castle Death'. I found those books to be to laborious.
As an aside, do any of you think that the GrandMaster series isn't as good as the Kai/Magnakai series'?

As an aside, do any of you think that the GrandMaster series isn't as good as the Kai/Magnakai series'? Yes. Once the Darklords were out of the frame, a lot of the magic was gone. Also an overmighty Lone Wolf required the creation of increasingly daft Grand Master skills and enemies that, had you bumped into them in FftD, would have used you as a toothpick.

Actually, I must strongly disagree! For me, the two greatest Lone Wolf books are 15: The Dark Crusade and 18: Dawn of the Dragons. Dever himself has said that his own favourite adventures are #18 and #23: Mydnight's Hero. While the destruction of the Darklords might appear to some to engender a superpowered Lone Wolf, I actually feel that their removal is only to the benefit of the overall story. "Evil" is no longer all in one place, but can come from a variety of sources at the instigation of the King of the Darkness--Naar himself. In fantasy, the "global war" concept has been done to death, in my opinion, and the removal of the war on Magnamund makes it a more interesting place to visit. While I am a big fan of Lone Wolf, I've always felt that certain of the earlier stories . . . lack somewhat in storytelling. Fire on the Water, for example, is actualy quite boring the way it's written. The Grand Master books, however, tend towards better writing and more dynamic storytelling (fewer insta-deaths for not possessing a particular Discipline, for example, since you're considered to automatically possess the previous level of Kai knowledge). I think the Grand Master series is actually more consistent that the Kai+Magnakai series. But that's just my opinion. Comments?
