I want to make flowcharts for some gamebooks, right?
So I read somewhere here that the flowcharts here are made with Graphviz.
So I downloaded and installed Graphviz.
...what now?
I have absolutely no idea how to use Graphviz. It is like no program I have ever seen before. Please someone, tell me what to do! The documentation is no help at all.

I sympathise--the documentation accompanying Graphviz isn't of much help. Attached is a DOT file (a text file with a .dot suffix). This is the source file I created and used to generate a flowchart for an old 134-section adventure written by Ian Livingstone for his 1982 books Dicing with Dragons. If you open it in a text editor, you can see what sort of information is contained in it, and it should give you some ideas on how to create a DOT file of your own adventure. Once the DOT file is complete, load it into GVEdit.EXE, which is part of the Graphviz installation. (FYI, you should be able to click Start/Run in Windows, and then type GVEdit.EXE at the prompt and press ENTER.) GVEdit will auto-generate a flowchart of the adventure based on the information provided in the DOT file. If you click Graph/Settings, you can change the output to whatever you like. I prefer SVG, but I think the default is PNG-image. Make sure that the Layout Engine is set to "dot". It's a dropdown menu, and I think 'dot' is the default, so it shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to use GVEdit.EXE to actually create and edit DOT files, though in earlier versions it was a bit too unstable to do this, so I used a normal text editor. 1.01 actually looks pretty good, though. I'm sure the template DOT file I use is inefficient, but once the flowchart has been generated that becomes irrelevant, so I prefer to keep things easy to read and understand. I'm no expert myself! Hope it helps?! Attachments:
