Well, I intended to be posting more MSN (or gmail) chat posts for my new run through of Lone Wolf 1-20, but in the end, my friend (Kavan) and I have decided to skype the entire series. It's actually been a lot of fun—you give up the epic-style writing, obviously, but it goes a lot faster and getting to see the look on the player's face as they encounter classic scenes from my childhood (from this community's collective childhoods) is priceless.
I don't have video capture equipment, so I'm sorry I can't post direct feeds to the videos. It's amazing seeing someone explore Lone Wolf for the first time, asking questions about everything... and usually Joe has the answers, and when he doesn't, it's wonderful how easy it is to assume the answer from all the details he has given.
In any case, I thought I would post some key moments from each playthrough, and invite you guys to share your own memories... right now we played through Flight From the Dark, up to the bridge fight (which I'm expanding a la the Female Lone Wolf playthrough).
1) The Cener Druid hole
You know, I've NEVER been in that hole. This was the first place I created some new material, cause Kavan DIDNT open the silver box, and thus would have encountered an instant death when the stone slab crashed down. I added in the option of climbing up the hole that the slab fell from, to reach the outdoors. But before that, Kavan tried to get through that wooden door... and I put something NEW on the other side. A dark terror washed over his heart, and he practically ran to that slab to start climbing. Then he heard the door slowly creak open down below him. At this point he was nearly shitting himself. Long story short, he got out, but it was genuinely freaky. I love that cave! Don't know how I never found it in the past. I mean, I knew it was there from looking at the SVG files, but it was epic legitimately getting to see it and play around in that environment. I still think it was a Cener Druid in there, in the original book. Any thoughts?
2) The Kraan attack the refugees
Dever puts players in a tough spot, making them choose between saving the children or saving themselves. That section is a little funky in the original book, it's like no matter what you do, the children end up dying. Here, I really drove in the screws, making it seem like a bad idea to save the kids... but how could you morally leave them behind? It ended up being a great moment, as Kavan TRIED to save them, but bailed just as the three Giaks landed. It's great seeing a player actually be afraid of Giaks (I've made them pretty blood thirsty in this playthrough... that scene ended with them eating one of the children while the kid was still alive).
3) The Monkeys and the Fallen Tree
This was great because Kavan really had wanted to take Animal Kinship, but didn't. There were a few times he could have used it (he really really wanted to save that bear by the Cener cave, but without animal kinship, I made the bear fight him), but my favorite was with the monkeys who are chattering behind the tree. Not knowing what they were, he tried to sneak up on them with camoflage. He didn't do a bad job, but then he was so frightened of what they might be, he waited behind the log until they had moved on. Even now, he doesn't know what that was, or what went scampering into the woods. He never actually saw them.
So like I said: sorry I don't have a viable method of actually posting the videos or converting the adventure to text. But I'll keep sharing little moments like this as we play, and encourage you to comment or share your own memories of these times in what were the defining books of my childhood.
All the best,
Zipp
