In Castle Death, after a battle with some webs (!) I was directed that i had to discard a 'Weapon' 'of my choice'.
Can I discard the 'Jewelled Mace' or similiar 'weapon-like special item'? I was hoping to hang onto the Sommerswerd and Silver Bow of Duadon, which were my two weapons.

The Sommerswerd and Jewelled Mace are two « weapon-like special items » to begin with. You should lose a normal weapon, since there's no way on Kai's green earth the Sommerswerd would get irretrievably stuck in a mere web.

Oiseau . Thanks, but I don't actually have any 'normal' weapons - just the Sommerswerd, Jewelled Mace, Dagger of Vashna and the Silver Bow.

I recommend having at least 1 disposable weapon since incidents where you risk losing a weapon are not totally uncommon. Since you have 2 weapon slots that don't count towards your backpack limit, there is no drawback at all.

One way of interpreting this section is that technically you don't have any weapons (just weaponlike Special Items) and thus you don't lose anything.

Thanks all - see my blog for how I tried to come up with a workable rule for the situation.

I fear there is a Lone Wolf Club Newsletter reply which states that if you don't have a normal weapon to lose, then you do indeed lose a fancy weapon-like Special Item. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings True. The obvious solution is just to always carry a normal weapon or two. There's really no reason not to given how easy they are to come by, and they are needed occasionally when Special Items are unavailable. There are also a few times where you are asked if you possess a certain type of weapon, such as a dagger, which can be used to perform some specific task such as picking a lock.
