Book III: The Caverns of Kalte
Caverns of Kalte introduces the northern wastes of Magnamund, together with a whole new array of monsters and barbarians that populate the region. The book can essentially be broken into three parts. The first part requires you to actually traverse the icy wastes, and here the adventure plays out fairly realistically, where the goal is to endure and survive. There are some moments that are interesting; I thought the option of covering yourself in Baknar Oil is inspired (more on that later). Ultimately, one way or another, you will reach the next stage of the book, where you discover the Caverns of Kalte.
This part acts as a bit of a connector between the first part and the final area, and I think it is done fairly well. There are several ways to enter the caverns, with each entry point landing LW in a different section of the caverns. I particularly like that although using the Baknar Oil overland keeps you warm and reduces endurance loss, in the caverns it quickly becomes a liability, as there are predators down there that hunt Baknar!
The final section is essentially a dungeon crawl with a few interconnected rooms. At the end of the dungeon, you face the ‘boss’, and if you have the correct item, you win. If you do not, you must fight a big baddie.
The book is well designed, and considering you have the Sommerswerd, there is a fairly straightforward path to follow that involves no combats. However, there is also a very nice Helm that provides a +2 CS bonus that will come in very handy for future books. For this reason, this walkthrough strongly recommends fighting the Crystal Frostwyrm in order to acquire the Ornate Silver Key.
