Book IV: The Chasm of Doom
Lone Wolf travels to the Southlands at the head of a small troop in the fourth adventure of the Kai series. The initial goal is to find out what happened to Captain D’Val and his men, and the clues Dever leaves around for the player keep the adventure interesting throughout.
Overall I found this to be a fairly satisfying adventure. There is enough variety to have a few playthroughs, and some of the battles are engaging. The siege towards the end was perhaps the highlight of the book, but I also liked the initial sections where you led your men to their inevitable deaths hehe.
In terms of difficulty and design, the book does have a fairly easy route that allows the player to pick up several good backpack items. Towards the end, things aren’t as straightforward and combat is likely. The combats with the warhounds can be avoided by choosing another route, however this other route has a 20% chance of fighting a couple of rounds against a CS17 without the Sommerswerd; the warhounds path has a razor thin higher success rate in comparison. There is also an unavoidable 10% chance that you will be shot by a sniper.
