Book IX: The Cauldron of Fear
This book is where the difficulty starts to go up a notch in the Magnakai series, and causes a bit of debate in terms of the safekeeping rule. In an attempt to better offset the overwhelming power of the Sommerswerd, Dever increases the combat stats of certain baddies if Lone Wolf is wielding the Swerd. It is in the player’s best interest to avoid using the Swerd against the final baddie in this adventure, and there are two methods in getting rid of this weapon. One is to leave it in safekeeping and pick it up later, the other is to become captured in this book and only collect your other special and backpack items.
This solution assumes that Lone Wolf can access safekeeping at the beginning of Book 10. As such, it is recommended you leave the Swerd in safekeeping for this adventure, along with some Gold Crowns. How you deal with the final enemy in this adventure depends on your personal attributes. Please see the table below:
Essentially, a low CS character (green) is better off throwing the Dagger of Vashna (and risking a 10% chance of failure/death). However, stronger characters (blue/red) have a higher than 90% chance of killing this enemy if they use the Psychic Ring to overcome his defences. There is a 5% chance you may end up using the Alether against the Senate guards, so it is recommended that you take another potion of Alether with you, note that there is actually about a 20% chance of losing all of your backpack items though. This is not really a big issue considering the amount of Alether you have left in safekeeping, however.
