If you want to create a Lone Wolf based game in 3D like a modern shootemup type setup the only game I have ever seen that seems to be suited to swords rather than guns in the 3D arena would be the Thief series. I have played a demo of Thief II, but now that Thief III is out I think it would make an excellent basis for an action adventure. Rather than a shootemup it is a sneakemup.
As a kid I remember games like IK+ which was basically a beat'em'up where you used a joystick to fight an opponent. Pushing the fire button initiated a move while pushing the joystick in a certain direction created a blow or action. (ie push the joystick middle right with the fire button pressed and you aimed a kick at the waist of the enemy. Right angled down was a kick to the enemies feet and right angled up was a punch to the face if the enemy was to your right. Middle to the left was a block, low to the left was a sweeping turning kick to the left, and high to the left was a rolling jump to the left. Clicking the fire button and pulling down was a sweeping kick in the direction you were facing and pushing forward with the button pressed was a jumping kick forward. Points were awarded based on whether you hit the target while they were facing you or facing away. (double if they were facing you).
I describe these moves because you had lots of move/attack options readily available an you could fight in real time.
I have bought NWN just because of Altaris's modules but haven't played them yet because I need a computer upgrade...
The main reason I liked LW was because it was simple and easy to play. A real time system that was flexible and allowed a range of attack moves to be selected quickly and easily would suit a LW game more than a D&D type method in my opinion. (Not wishing to detract from any other ideas of course)
