In which game book do you start as a hulking, incomprehensible monster and, near the end of the book, infamously come to a set of seven rooms, each differently marked, where even the right choice will almost certainly kill you?! Creature of Havoc by Steve Jackson, I believe. Not that I have ever gotten anywhere near the end...

The book is correct, but was it actually [by] Steve Jackson, and if so, which one? If not, it was only "Steven Jackson and Ian Livingstone presents..." Who is the author? NS.

It is by Steve Jackson and illustrated by Alan Langford, with one of the better Fighting Fantasy covers.

What he said. Although the cover is different in my (reissued) version, replaced by an image by Les Edwards. Wizard Books is only reissuing books by Steve Jackson and/or Ian Livingstone. None of the guest-authored books get resurrected. Pity, really, some of my favourite FFs are by other writers...

The original artwork to Creature of Havoc was actually by Ian Miller. Interesting and true story: originally, Miller's painting was supposed to be of Darramouss, the guy in charge of the Yellowstone mines, and the dungeon where the Creature initially finds itself; but Steve Jackson loved the artwork so much that he actually changed the text of the book so that the image was now of Zharradan Marr. Cool, eh?

That's the one I own, though I have seen the original.

Guess I get to ask a non-LW question, then. - Name a gamebook which checks whether the player character is a carp.

A really awesome one that I should get around to reading.

Could this be the Vordak gem? No, I think I'm a bit off track... Hey, was that ever used anywhere outside the Graveyard of the Ancients? Yes, you're way off, on both cases. I'm not completely sure, but I think it is a red herring and useless besides adding nice flavour text. Oh, and "sought after by magicians" is a direct quote. How about closing this thread and opening a new one for this trivia?

In a LW adventure you can pick up something that you recognise to be of no immediate value for you (at least not obviously so). [Insert: lame joke about towel] But you see that it is sought after by magicians like Banedon: What is it? Well, I remember in book 21 that there is 3 articles that you can find along your way and that you can sell to a magician from Kakush. Selling them for money is the only good thing these articles are going to do for you. There's the Siyenese Crown, an Iron Skull and an Emerald that I don't remember the name. All these things are all Special Items. If it's not the answer that you were looking for, then you can at least say that I'm not completely wrong since they all fit your criteria.

I would've thought it was that jar of berries you can find in Plague-lords of Ruel... if memory serves.

I was thinking of Black Berries. But I guess the Horns would qualify too. So, I guess you have both to post a new question.

It's not another weird CYOA adventure is it? You Are A Shark, or something?

I doubt it. The CYOA rarely kept track of what the player had done through questions. The only ones I can think of that did that were "Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey?" and it's sequel.
Also, in YOU ARE A SHARK! you never do get to be the majestic carp...
