I like to get a feel for peoples' strategies or style with some questions about what they do in certain situations in the books. For example, in Book 6, when faced with the choice of the archery tourney or the side trip to get the Taunor Water, which do you choose and why? In either situation you are faced with the possibility of getting some nice stuff. As part of the decision, it's interesting to look at the implications in the long run too, as to what effect those items will have in future books.
What's your choice?

I always went for the bow... as it was the book in which bow usage was introduced, it gave me a thrill, though i'm afraid i fudged a bit to win...
Having the Sommerswerd I did not find too much use for another special hand weapon, and the healing water... well, those backpack items are really short-lived.

I always chose the bow over the water because it complimented LW's fighting style very nicely. Silver Bow for ranged attacks, followed by Sommerswerd or Dagger of Vashna for any close combat, along with a few rounds of Psi combat thrown in for fun. All in a days work for the Kai. Of course my confidence got the better of me in TJoH where I lost the darn thing in Tharro in the blasted archery range!!

Don't you also get the Bronin Warhammer (+1 CS) on the trip to Castle Taunor? I forget. I usually don't bother with the archery contest, because winning the contest is too far from a sure thing. Actually, I think the chances are highly against Lone Wolf winning. I think the best CS Lone Wolf can have in this contest is: CS 19 + 3 WS + 1 LoreCircle of Fire = 23. That blasted Ranger, Altan,'s got something like a CS 30 in the contest!

That's why you're supposed to use the Sommerswerd.

Yep a -7 combat ratio is pretty tough but if you are really sad, like me, you add 3 to all random number rolled like it says in the description of bow use, stretching the rules a bit.... OK cheating. But I did get the bow and I didn't even chop Atlan's leg off.

I'm sure you can help your CS out by using Psi-surge as well allowing you to taunt Altun about how you're going to chop his leg off. The only one prob is that if you are sticking by the rules then any armour bonuses shouldn't apply.
This is getting too hard - Reginald de Curry is right....just chop his leg off. It will also allow you to escape with his horse more easily as the poor crippled dude wont be able to chase you!

... stretching the rules a bit.... OK cheating ... Who said cheats never prosper? ;D I always go for the bow because it's trés cool and always get it, by Hook or by Crook (with emphasis on the capitals there, says deiseach cryptically). Which is actually a pity, because having played through the Castle Taunor scenario to see what it was like, it is a tremendously atmospheric episode of the LW canon and features the most evil death ever. Great stuff

Once the grandmaster rules were unveiled, I always went for the Silver Bow, because you could still use in the in the grand master books....
...it's bloody difficult to win that archery tournament though! I usually "cheat" and use PsiSurge in the combat ;-) And consider the bonus from my silver helmet to be "magical" ;-)

I think alot of depends on whether you are the kind of person who likes to use a bow. Myself, I've always been a bit more of a hand-to-hand man (no unfortunate pun intended) myself, so I often go after that warhammer and the 6ep water. Once when I went through the series, I did focus on using the bow and got it then and it is quite the useful item if that is what you are into.

If you're using mindblast, psi-surge I'd double the bonus it's got to be murder when you are trying to concentrate. ;D

I always go for the bow; it's way too useful not to. My strategy: I usually use an alether potion, so end up with 2 for that, 2 for the Silver Helm, 2 for Mindblast, 3 for Weaponmastery, 1 for Circle of Fire: this makes 10 plus my starting CS, not too difficult once you add these in. If my CS is high (18+ before the bonuses) I don't even use the alether, since the Combat Results Table is skewed to favor LW. Of course, I DO really love Reginald's method! ;D @ Reginald: BTW, is that evil spatula a genuine spatula from Spatula City, or is it merely a cheap imitation?

Spatulon happens to be the founder of Spatula City; he sold out to Sy Greenblum to pursue his music career.

For me (too) it's always the Silver Bow of Duadon - I just love bows, and as Lone Wolf always had rather Ranger-like qualities to me, a bow seems a lot more appropriate than a warhammer (even one forged from Bronin). And the Taunor water is nice, but nevertheless it's a one-shot item. (Err, pun not intended.)
Have to admit though, it's a pity that you cannot visit Taunor if you choose the Archery Contest ... just like deiseach said.
