I've confirmed with Jon... 1/ If you're happy to pay for development of the software, that's fine. There is already precedent for developers accepting donations, so long as they promote AON donations on the same page - see: www.projectaon.org/staff/frederic/downloads.phpwww.projectaon.org/staff/frederic/projectaon.php2/ You can distribute the software through iTunes (or any other means) so long as it does not contain copyright material such as text or images from AON - these must be downloaded only from AON due to our licensing restrictions. FREE would be the way to go with distribution, encouraging donations

You're right btw, the CNF project is not mature enough to serve as a basis for this, it's still in its infancy.
It's unfortunate, because once it's done then it will be the way to go.

It's no problem - I think the first version of the app is just going to be a simple Action Chart manager, with battle capabilities, like StatsKeeper.

Just out of curiosity, how are you going to go about retrieving the data? Are you going to load it live off the web on a per-use basis?
If so, you might want to consider using the .NET stuff I did (I saw you offering tech support on the thread so I assume you know what I'm talking about).
It was just sample code, but it could very easily be adapted into a web service that just grabs a particular section.
In fact, I just realized that I have a mobile version of a lone wolf web app already done... all I have to do is resize it and make a couple little changes. But then the hosting is a bit... ugh.

P.S. I have an iPhone - will this work with the old iPhones or only the new 3G ones?

I'll basically use the same idea that you did - I can't use the code directly, as C# doesn't work on the iPhone. But basically, it should cache it on the device after the first download.

So just to update on the progress of the app, I've been accepted into the iPhone Dev Program! I paid my fee, so I guess, "in for a penny, in for a pound". After being accepted, I've looked into the beta testing options, and I can now create beta test versions for anyone who wants it. They have to be custom created for your iPhone/iPod, so if you do want to test, let me know, and I'll get the necessary info from you. With the developer program, I am of course finally able to test on my own iPhone, not just the simulator. So the next step is to get a working combat simulator, test, and release! That is, of course, assuming the legal issues don't hold us up....

With your combat simulator, is it a case that the user enters the values from the book page themselves? I would imagine that is fine. Check with the owner of Statskeeper before using their mechanisms & layout if you haven't already - I'm sure they'll be fine with it, but it is only polite.

Yes, the user will be filling out the fields on the own, until the action chart is done. I'll go ahead and check with the StatsKeeper dev on the general layout.

You know, I had a neat idea about this... it would be awesome to have the random number table show up on the iPhone and allow the user to "touch" the random number! It would be basically up to the user whether to do it with their eyes closed or not, but that's the same story as with the books anyway!

Neat idea - would definitely be something to think about. Maybe as an option for the user...

alternatively, you could have a random number table with all of the numbers constantly shifting, very rapidly and randomly, so that they can touch the pad with their eyes open but still essentially get a random number (no way to predict what their finger will land on.) It's the same result as just calling a random number function, but far more interactive, which is part of the fun!

Did anything further happen with this concept? I'd love to be able to play the books on my phone.
