Hello again, In programming in some gameplay options, I figured it would be a good idea to let people specify what rules that want to apply to the big archery contest to get the Silver Bow. That way you can make it as realistic or un- as you like!
Here are some of the possible options that I could think of: Allow Mindblast Allow Psi-surge(losing 2 real EP each round, not target points) Allow doubling of Psychic bonuses (increased concentration - my idea) Allow Alether Use Allow Silver Helmet bonus Allow Sommerswerd bonus Allow Shield bonus
As far a Weaponmastery, only if you have WM in bow do you get the +3. WM in another weapon will do you no good here.
The archery contest will have no bearing on whether a play-through might make it to the Hall of Fame(those who complete the book on "By the Book" rules, or "Hardcore" rules")
Can anyone think of anything that I've missed? Any other suggestions for options in the contest?

Will you be presenting a suggested set of default options, or leaving it entirely up to the player? I'd suggest a reasonable default setting would be to accept everything except the Sommerswerd, shield and the doubled psychic bonuses.

Yeah, that's just what I was thinking. And then the player can change the rules to however he/she sees fit. Since Joe Dever has made no official statements regarding this contest, I figure anything goes - that's why this contest is not going to be counted in the By-the-book or Hardcore Halls of Fame requirements.

So, here's my proposed options list + defaults: Allow Mindblast : Yes Allow Psi-surge : Yes Allow doubling of Psychic bonuses : No Allow Alether Use : Yes Allow Silver Helmet bonus : Yes Allow Sommerswerd bonus : No Allow Shield bonus: No
Can anyone think of anything I should add to the list for options? I think that pretty much covers it...

You've already indicated that the Sommerswerd, if used, will only confer its +8 bonus in this fight without stacking Weaponskill/Weaponmastery on top of that, so I think that covers it.

Maybe you can modify weaponskill bonus with bow that LW can add 3 to the number chosen in RNT each combat round instead of gaining +3 to his CS. Example: RNT number picked = 3 will be 6 (if LW picks 7,8,9 or 0 it will be 0)
This is my usual way to fight for the Silver Oak Bow.

Remind me - where in the books does this take place (long time since I read it!)

www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/06tkot/sect340.htm in case anybody else is interested! To me, the instructions are absolutely clear - there is no mention of bonuses from any source other than weaponmastery, which makes perfect sense! How can a helmet or shield help me fire a bow (magic, possibly, but I think the magic is aimed at defense not offence) One could argue that mindblast could be used against other contestants when they are taking their shot, but I'm not sure Lone Wolf would see the need to cheat in a contest - it goes against character. Of course, allowing the reader to select options is fine - but the default should be as it says on the page, that only weaponmastery affects the roll. It is not combat - it is a contest. On page www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/06tkot/sect26.htm the rules are equally clear - you are firing at a target, not at your opponent. The footnote clearly states shield etc are not applicable bonuses. Again, you could argue PSI skills could help - but again, would Lone Wolf use anything other than bow training to gain an unfair advantage unless he perceived his opponent was doing the same? I read "normal rules of combat" to refer to the use of the combat table, rather than individual bonuses etc. All that being said, again it is up to the reader how they play the books, and as long as the defaults are sensible I am all in favour of providing the ability to vary the books to suit.

One could argue that mindblast could be used against other contestants when they are taking their shot, but I'm not sure Lone Wolf would see the need to cheat in a contest - it goes against character. In book 2, in an arm wrestliing contest for 5 gold crowns, If LW has Mindblast, he uses it against his opponent to force him into submission - LW doesn't even get "If you have Mindblast and wish to use it..." He just automatically "cheats". LW's character does not always play out to be the gallant, chivalrous, fair-playing type (though, I feel like most of the time, he is good like that) At any rate, it is for exactly those personal interpretation reasons that I've given several options for people to choose in the Archery contest. You could play it exactly the way you described, alderaine, or factor in a couple of other bonuses. It's good to have options. Edit: Just saw Honza's suggestion - that's good one. I like it - I'll probably include it as an option.

Dave, did you add the option to chop Altan's leg off with the Sommerswerd?

That bit cracks me up.
And then it brings to mind the Monty Python classic, where the black knight gets various appendages cut off and says "It's just a flesh wound", "'tis but a scratch", etc. Very funny stuff.

Dave, did you add the option to chop Altan's leg off with the Sommerswerd? He actually did: ... Allow Sommerswerd bonus ... And yeah, that's essentially (funny)! ;D

Lone Wolf needs money when something like that happens.
