Sorry for the lack of update! Been very busy! We haven't played in three weeks, but will be back in next weekend, so I figure it's time to catch up. I'll do so in about three posts, here, throughout the day.
To give an update on some new rules, I occasionally allow the players to use EP or CS points to increase die rolls, especially when using Kai Disciplines. It's provided a nice meta-game, in which they have to debate whether the need of the moment is more useful than those dwindling EP and CS scores...
Dawn of Destruction, cont.
The twisting streets of Toran are no longer what they seem. The companions become separated, Silent Falcon ending up in a house that seems to have no exits and Storm Rat ending up in Pelenor square, where a riot is about to break out. Storm Rat feels a disdain for the quarrelsome peasants and does nothing to prevent the riot (this takes a toll on his morale, however, and his CS score for the day drops). Presently, Silent Falcon arrives on the scene, having forced her way through a weak wall in the house. At that moment, the riot is stopped by outside forces: the street buckles and twists, rising up like a cliff and taking a little girl with it; a fire breaks out in one corner of the square; a young squire loses control of his horse and is dragged behind it through the panicking citizens; Sun Eagle's massive statue topples from its base and falls into the crowd, then begins to roll towards a familiar herbmaster.
The companions leap into action. Silent Falcon grabs a hay cart and wheels it back towards the little girl, catching her in the nick of time. Storm Rat rushes through the crowd to the aid of the herbmaster, dragging him out of the way of the statue and then curing his broken leg. The horse knocks aside Silent Falcon's first attempts to quell its fear, but eventually her animal kinship prevails and she mounts and controls the mare. The fire proves more difficult to suppress. Silent Falcon is not a natural speaker and Storm Rat's disdain for the crowd continues: he thinks they need to be heading to the harbour, not wasting time here. Thus, the crowd is not quick to rally to their support and the two end up fighting the fire alone, Storm Rat cursing all the while at Silent Falcon's desire to waste energy solving what surely the freed mages can fix in a moment. His anger becomes fear when Silent Falcon is trapped in the burning building as it begins to collapse.
In that moment, the townspeople finally come to the rescue and pull the Kai Lords from the fire, then proceed to calm themselves and put out the remaining fires. Despite Storm Rat's feelings, the two Kai Lords are now heralded as heroes, having remained calm in the face of danger until the crowd could control itself. Storm Rat is given a finely forged blade by a smithy (+1 CS) and the two are loaded up with what herbs can be spared before they head away from the square and deeper into the city, looking much the worse for wear.
Silent Falcon can't help but feel that Storm Rat may have been right... she is unsure about the time that was spent in the square. But both Kai Lords also feel a slight glimmer of hope inside them: after all, they have helped save lives. And neither can argue that their new mount will make things much easier... and hopefully speed them on their way to the harbour.
more coming...
