First time you get one it says it takes up two backpack spaces. By the magnakai adventures, this is no longer mentioned. How many spaces does the rope take up?

I played the GM series first, so I always thought that the rope was taking only one space since they never mentionned it otherwise. I believe Joe changed the rule about it between the Kai and the Magnakai series so it could be easier to store more items in the backpack.

I always figured that the Rope that takes up two spaces is just longer/bulkier than the others. Perhaps it is a case of Dever changing his mind, but it all makes sense in the end.

You are thinking about the Ropes in book 3? In some places they are even referred to as "long coil of Rope" or "Long Rope".
You can find a Rope in book 2, where nothing is said about it taking two spaces in the Backpack. And in book 4 you get another Rope that only takes one space.
So I'm pretty sure it's just that some Ropes are more bulky than others.

It's only the rope you find in Ikaya, in the 3rd book, that takes up two spaces. Later ropes (you find some in Chasm of Doom and later books) only ever take one space. On a similar note, you can find a brass whistle in Shadow on the Sand, which is a special item. In Kingdoms of Terror, when you're escaping Varetta, you can get another one, but no mention is made as to where to store it. Since I figured a whistle isn't that bulky, I took it as a special item as well (since I gave my first whistle for a horse! )

In one book, it mentions that if the text doesn't say (whether it is a special item or not) that it counts as a backpack item. I used to always go by this, but no longer. For example, I found a Gold Key with a Gold Chain (Brass Whistle is another good example) and I just consider it a Special.
I am pretty lenient these days with counting various items as Special... or allowing a Special Weapon to take up a Weapons Slot if I feel like it. It seems to be in the spirit of the rules.
There are different kinds of rope... elven rope is super-light and packs down really well. I think silk rope would be the same. The text, when it calls for rope, never seems to care how much you have (1 slot or two) so I always ditch the 2-slot rope at the first opportunity.

A related question: 2 slot items...
I am thinking about the Torch and TInderbox. Sometimes the text wants to know if you have a torch and does not care whether you also have the tinderbox. I feel as if I should carry both just in case. Is the tinderbox a wasted item? Or is it better to just carry the torch?
I also used to carry the Kalte Firesphere, but sometimes the text ignores the possibility that you have it... it REALLY wants you to have that torch! Then I'm in the dark even though I have the Kalte Firesphere.

Similarly, the map of Varetta counts as a special item, yet the maps you can buy in Luyen (Summerlund, Tekaro, Luyen) all count as backpack items. Weird stuff, those maps.

As for keys, there's at least one key (the Black Key in book 10) that is explicitly labelled as a Backpack Item. Many keys are labelled as Special Items, and some are not labelled at all but should probably be treated as Backpack Items, since that is the default. People, if you find any ambiguities of this kind, please notify us (Project Aon) so that we can put footnotes in our versions of the books, in the cases where that may help resolve the issues.

That darned Brass Whistle: It's a special item in book 5, and a backpack item in books 6 and 9 (any others?) It hasn't done anything useful yet for me!

Hm, I cannot find anything in book 5 say that it is a Special Item? (And no, I don't know of any use for it either... but I have not searched all GM books.)

It isn't clear if you must drop a torch, after you used it, or if you can keep it... I don't think a torch burns out completely in the amount of time of a single section of text...... Even in Grey Star's adventures it ins't clear... in the maze at the end of book 1, you can use the same torch in many sections one after another in little time... I guess it is always the same torch... The text doesn't specify it, but you must always have a Tinderbox to light a torch... even if the text asks for the torch without tinderbox... I guess So many question points !!!

Wait, doesn't the brass whistle give you an advantage when trying to control the itikar? I'm also fairly sure it is used to calm a certain beast down who would otherwise attack you.

Maybe it does, I can't remember, but by then I always have either Animal Friendship or the Onyx Medallion, so I don't really get to use it with the Itikar.
