Not everyone with latent Kai powers becomes a Kai Lord. I doubt the Sommerswerd can tell the difference between someone with latent Kai powers and someone who has actually travelled to the Monastery and joined the Kai.
And the question about the dwarf in Castle Death was clarified in a Newsletter. The actual text reads
'Should it be used in combat by anyone who is not a Kai lord, its power will fade and be lost forever.'
That dwarf didn't use it in combat.

'Should it be used in combat by anyone who is not a Kai lord, its power will fade and be lost forever.' That dwarf didn't use it in combat. Problem is, he could've, if it hadn't blasted his hand. Or to put it another way, as long as the sword blasts the hands of unauthorised wielders, nobody but the Kai can use it in combat (and thus the powers-fading warning is redundant). Hence Random Minion Protection™: the Sommerswerd's hand-blasting power can be suppressed by someone sufficiently powerful, who could then wield it, but the cast of extras don't pose a threat.

I liked the "King Ulnar is a Kai" theory also... but in one of the newsletters Joe clarified this and explained that he wasn't. Sun-Eagle claimed the sword at the edge of the Maakengorge when the King died. How if we put it like this: One thing for sure,King Ulnar and his brethren is a force Good sent by God Kai and Ishir. At moment he was given an army of soldiers together with his own kingdom. The best weapon entrusted by the gods tom him is the conniving back stabbing sommerswerd ;D (no offense everyone ) .Well, as you can see,his mission is to thwart the evil plans of Vashna to conquer Magnamund. I'm pretty sure, as a leader, he arranged his troops carefully, as well as equipped them with military education or the like..... In the end, he courageously sacrifice himself to put and end to the Dark Lord Legion (at least for some centuries)..... Sun Eagle, which was called Baron oh what is his name again? at that time, full with sorrow and despair retrieved Sommerswerd. For the security of Sommlending and House of Ulnar in the future, he later set up an elite warrior which is now known as the Kai Order..... I think Joe said that the Sword could be wielded by Kai -or- members of the House of Ulnar. This was a little bit tough to swallow since it seems to contradict a bit the passage in Book 2. So my conclusion, based on my understanding, King Ulnar is not formally a Kai Lord, but Kai Order was developed by Sun Eagle based on his skills. Those skills later expands year after year....

First of all, the legends didn't exist until after Vashna died. Before that, all we know is that the sword was presented to Ulnar by Kai. I always thought that Ulnar and his army would've naturally recieved Kai's blessing along with the sword, thus becoming the first Kai Lord of a Kai Army. Sun Eagle we can then say is like a disciple, who, like Lone Wolf, is one of the last of the kai after the battle. He then takes on the Magnakai quest and officially founds the Kai Monastery when the lorestones have been recovered.
Does anyone remember who took the lorestones from the Monastery in the first place? I know a helghast took the book.

Something in my memory's telling me that the Sommlending brought the Sommerswerd with them when they came to Northern Magnamund... King Kian ring any bells with anyone? I'm getting a few search results off Google, but I don't know what their source is any more than mine. Were they ever actually in the monastery? (See Sun Eagle and the Lorestones for prior discussion.)

No idea about the Lorestones, but it wasn't a Helghast who took the Book of the Magnakai. Newsletter Summer Special 1986 states: Eagle-eyed Kai Lords will spot that this is almost exactly how Grant/Barnett wrote Lone Wolf's 'Telling' in The Tellings, proving that he can stick to the brief if he puts his mind to it.
