At a glance, I believe Shadow on the Sand is the first book in which you may use Safekeeping:
This text doesn't appear in The Chasm of Doom. (It also only mentions Special Items, but the Newsletters clarified that any items may be so stored.)

Peregrine,
Interesting - where did you find this quote? My copy of Shadow on the Sand does not say this - it only mentions the ability to store Gold Crowns.
Was there updated text added later?

In my version of Book 5 (Beaver Edition, black spine) the stuff about Safekeeping is written under Special Items in the How to Use Your Equipment section.

That's where I got it from, in the PA edition (http://www.projectaon.org/xhtml/lw/05sots/equipmnt.htm). As this text mentions the book by name and doesn't appear in the others, I took it as original rather than PA-standardised frontmatter.
Also, this version doesn't say that Crowns may be stored. The first PA edition to say this would seem to be The Kingdoms of Terror...
The previous books stop at "...carry a maximum of fifty Crowns."
