I've been honing the ol' digital cartography skills with CC3 and I thought it would be fun to create a few maps and the Kai Monastery is a unique design challenge. Thanks to Mr. Dever and the fine folks at Project Aon, we have access to a bunch of references including the excellent Mangamund Companion. I'm in the very early planning stages of the Monastery map when I noticed something odd in the Monastery map images (MC p. 44-45). On page 44 you clearly see a body of water, presumably a river or a moat flowing on the other side of the exterior wall of the keep. But on page 45, the continuation of the keep image, one of the towers is labeled Durncrag Tower. The only rivers near the Monastery are the River Unoram which I estimate to be around 18 mi (30 km) away to the North and the River Eledil which is 26 mi (43 km) away to the south. Assuming the Durncrag Tower faces the actual Durncrags to the West of the Monastery, can I presume the water I'm seeing is some sort of moat or irrigation system?
Which brings up an interesting question: is the Monastery self-sustaining? Is it granted some sort of independent fief status? If so I'm guessing there have to be towns or villages nearby, maybe attached to the Monastery itself. If that's the case then there have to be grain fields and pastureland nearby. In exchange for keeping the lands safe, the Kai are liege-lords of their domain and collect taxes or tithes and may even provide banking and magistrate services as well.
Thoughts?

The river closest to the south of the Kai Monastery is actually the Unoram; the Eledil is even further south. A smaller river flowing north and east of the Monastery is called River Pewas. But anyway, I have assumed that what is seen in that picture is just a small stream flowing beneath the hill where the Monastery is located. As you can see on pages 52 and 53 in the Magnamund Companion, yes, the Monastery has its own fief.

The map seems to indicate the status of Fryelund wasn't official until after the Massacre around MS 5050. The Multiplayer guidebook suggests gameplay around MS 5000. I'm guessing the fief was an unofficial dominionship prior to Lone Wolf's taking over after the massacre. Still there would be nearby settlements, forts, and farmsteads I'm betting.
Before Lone Wolf took over in 5050, I'm wondering who the land was "officially" lorded over by? Torn or King Unlar V?
