I believe I got to book 15 or so in the original series, and up to book 10 in the original "collectors series". I was fortunate enough to get a copy of Chai, and wondered what folks thought would be fair for starting stats, while allowing some credit for previous books?

So none would be the answer. This book would be very hard to do as first book however.

Would 44/39 be workable? Or do I need to add points?

Well, I went into it with 35, 52 basic, as of course you add +1CS and +2EN every book. But then there's equipment and Disciplines... Basically, read through the first 8 (21 to 28) it's more fun that way. They're all on Project Aon, and you can get an Action Chart that adjusts EN in combat, fights each round (you just have to remember 'psi-burn' at the end) and rolls random numbers for you!

I'd advice grand weaponmastery and kai surge, for all no gm books, especially with the extra discpline. If you start at the upper end of the scale that will help as well. One skill in particular can save you a very large number of EP, for it to have full effect you'd need to have sun thane.
Remember that you get 1 extra discpline in the reprint.

I played it as stated on PA, starting with 4 and with only CS 27- very challenging for the first 2 books! I would also recommend Deliverance- it gives an extra 30En per book when used wisely. Grand Huntmastery, Assimilance both handy for avoiding instance deaths and keeping damage down. As for Kai Alchemy, WOW- it's the Gift that keeps on Giving. Kai Screen essential in later books too...
