Why have the darklord Haakon no mindshield? There are some of his minions who have. But their master seems weak compared to them. Have Joe Dever forgotten this in the final section when Lone Wolf will fight the enemy?

Haakon is considerably weaker than he normally would be when Lone Wolf meets him in Book 5, because he is outside the Darklands. I think it's a safe bet that he'd be immune to psychic attacks as high as Psi Surge inside the Darklands.

furthermore, when you finally engage him in hand-to-talon combat, does it not say he'd just "reeled back as if weakened by the death of his {Crypt Spawn}"?

It makes me wonder why he even bothered using the Crypt Spawn, when he could have fought you himself in a more powerful form. Has anyone ever been killed by those things?

...and why he can use the mindblast and not the mindshield if he is outside the darklands? Both are mental abilities.

But even Lone Wolf can have one without the other. Haakon is a brute of a Darklord, not a refined backstabber. Thus, he was more likely to concentrate purely on offensive traits than defensive ones.

Anyways, he is moderately easy to kill if you play the game well, which is nice -
if he was some kind of Zakhan Kimah, you'd all be posting in complaining ;D

Interestingly, Haakon has a human face, which would seem to indicate some social skills. Perhaps that is why he can come to Vassagonia unchallenged!

Well, he has a possibly human face well hidden behind the helm, and breathing apparatus he needed to subsist outside the Darklands... not a very seductive sight anyway

Well, those Vassagonian helmets aren't that charming and nor, frankly, are the chaps inside. Haakon being reasonably presentable is fairly good in Vassagonia!

I'd say he can come to Vassagonia unchallenged because he holds the power of death in his hands. I mean, if Haakon came to MY house, I'd probably offer him ice cream, rather than say, "Get out of here, you ugly mo-fo."

Is it only darklords that get ice cream or do you offer it to other guests as well? And do darklords prefer icecream or would they not prefer a nice cold stiff drink? (afterall, a day of pillaging is hard work, eh?)
Just curious

I'm thinking just Darklords. Zipp seems like a fairly discerning host, probably more shrewd an entertainer than any of us first suspected. Ice cream for Darklords--it seems just a little too perfect. I sense the hand of Naar in this.

I think it is just a trick from Zipp to get rid of Haakon: we all know that Darklords are lactose intolerant, so they get sick when they eat any dairy product, like ice cream. ;D
