I think we just have to except that Dwarves the universe over are constantly doing stupid stuff like this. Part of their character, I guess, to dig up ancient evils. I think dwarves are a mix of Bloodhound and Terrier, combining the need to Sniff Things Out with the need to Dig Things Up.

Because she's so incredibly annoying, and the way she's written, she's (apparently) better than Lone Wolf at everything, and she's also more intellectual and just plain better. Except she's also the most, unlikeable, irritating bint to ever grace the hallowed halls of Magnamund. She should never have been written. Likewise, Alyss gets on my nerves for being capable of doing everything. Fair enough, forget Lone Wolf, why not just write The Alyss Show where she saves Magnamund without anyone dying.

Dusk Fox is 110% correct--by book 6, Q****** has become a thoroughly obnoxious character. She's a better Kai student than Lone Wolf, she's capable of better things, and she's so much more in touch with the world around her (*puke*). By book 7 she's completely awful, so smug, so arrogant, so brilliant and perfect at everything--ARGH! I thoroughly hate that character! It has nothing to do with different tastes; she's basically better than Lone Wolf at everything. So why doesn't she save Magnamund? Oh yeah--BECAUSE IT'S CALLED LEGENDS OF LONE WOLF[/b]! Gah! I really hate a lot of what Grant/Barnett did to Magnamund in the series!! Die, Q******, die! And Alyss too! And Petra!! And let's kill Banedon's arrogance while we're at it! And Paido's! Why were there no likeable characters in the Legends series? (I'm being careful to avoid spoilers in case you ever read the other books in the series, Wolfus, so you'll have to take my word for it. )

Eh... thank you... I start to understand... I still see her as girl from vol.2, who have nothing to lose, so she manage to survive... OK, I'll stop to irritate you with questions about her Sorry my english, it's pretty rusty. I haven't use it for about 3 years

Hey, dude, you don't irritate me--Q****** does! But that's because you're a Lone Wolf fan, and she patently never was. [Edit: Darn tags.]

*nods* Yeah, a bunch of us came to a similar conclusion a few months ago in a thread somewhere on this forum, including quotes by Grant/Barnett to that general effect. Like why he's retitled a number of the books he's selling as PDFs: The Claws of Helgedad (definite Magnamund reference) has become A Dagger in the Spine (no Magnamund reference); and The Secret of Kazan-Oud (Magnamund reference) has become Labyrinth (no Magnamund reference). Given half a chance, he'd probably rewrite the entire series without Lone Wolf in it, giving Alyss and Q****** centre stage. *shudder* [Edit: Stupid fecking Tags! ]

I don't doubt it. I recall hearing he disliked Eclipse of the Kai, stating it was too close to the generic fantasy genre, and was much happier with the rest of his series. To me, Eclipse of the Kai was the only book that felt like it at all belonged in the Lone Wolf series (though I still have my problems with it, especially where Zagarna and Alyss are concerned). I think that Grant/Barnett should have just written his own Qinefer series, since he was so unhappy playing nice in Dever's sandbox that he started burying turds in there.
Spoilers below, hidden for Wolfus' sake since I know he hasn't read past the Legacy of Vashna--
I actually like Alyss as a character as she appears in the final Lone Wolf books, as I didn't think she was annoying, nor did I feel she was stealing the spotlight. I just got tired of her doing everything in the Legends books. You almost want to tell her to just go kill the Darklords already, since she's so damn powerful.

After this two posts I think I've lost all trust I keep for Barnett... Joe Dever was for him maybe only a way to make himself more popular. That's sad...

Q****** is what we like to call a Mary Sue. Simple as.
As for the dwarves and their delvings, I have no doubt that it was a deliberate homage to LOTR. Much as the proliferation of a magical metal called some copyright-dodging misspelling of "mithril" (D&D talks of "mithral" and Final Fantasy of "mythril", for instance) is. It doesn't as I recall have a Magnamund analogue, at least not an obvious one.

Of course, Dwarves are useless when it comes to Milrith (patented obscure 90s computer game reference ahoy!).

Of course, Dwarves are useless when it comes to Milrith (patented obscure 90s computer game reference ahoy!). Woo, Simon the Sorcerer! I think the Dwarves of Bor just like to dig for the sake of digging. There's nothing really to mine, but they dig anyway, because what else would they do with their time? They're dwarves.
