Many of us here hold Joe's creation in the highest regard for its coherence (though I admit the move from Flight of the Dark to a high-tech communications tower on that Evil-controlled moon is probably jarring), its originality, its attention to language, the "realness" of the universe and its characters. Although Tolkien gets the nod for sheer attention to detail, I prefer Magnamund, Daziarn, the Plane of Darkness (I wish by the end, we get a visit to the Plane of Light), and the strange planets Lone Wolf gets to visit later in his career. I believe long ago, someone actually attempted a Lone Wolf mod for one of the Total War games, but when you see (I don't have the game but I watch videos on YouTube) what they've done with Warhammer, including the campaign-level mechanics, it just makes me sad that Magnamund will likely never see this translation. Even the backstory/mythos of Magnamund is superior to the admittedly better written and crafted fantasy gems. So to see Westeros and Warhammer capture the popular imagination (I mean there was a Warcraft movie for Gods' sakes!) I think about how great a game based on Magnamund would be, and how we could see RPG entries like the Witcher (again, I enjoy this series and setting but it's not remotely as engrossing, IMO), strategy war/conquest games like TW:WH, and how we could mine the past of Magnamund (dragon-being civilizations?! Shianti!? the older races exterminated by the Darklords?) and its future for all of it. I won't say that opportunity is entirely lost, but obviously Joe would have been the best representative to speak on behalf of his universe.
My job (or career) isn't that interesting. But maybe those of us with a creative bent and a passion for it should BE that person who carries Lone Wolf forward, for I fear it is fading.
