Yeah, we still need the question answered by Joe eventually: Whatever happened to Grey Star? (kinda like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?).

Reposting this from another topic--sorry for that. It just seems like more people were talking here, so it made more sense to throw in my two cents.
After replaying this book recently myself, I am forced to agree with you. I was letting a friend of mine use my computer to brush up her resume whilst playing in the other room, and there were multiple occasions where she actually came into my room and asked me why I was cursing so much.
The battle with the Kleasa is total murder, and it seems like the book just nickel-and-dimes your Willpower and Endurance to death. I mean, the noxious lake? The Kleasa? The whole episode with the Cave Mantiz? The book makes a habit of kicking your ass from page to page. I don't even think I completed it honestly--I'm pretty sure I totally cheated my way through everything after that whole Quoku ordeal.
In addition, I wish I'd been smarter with my Willpower early on, as well. I just kept getting into fights and never actually earning any nobles, so it was a huge drain on my Willpower with very little reward. I likewise wish I'd figured out that I should have blasted the Kleasa with everything I had before wasting three rounds getting my butt handed to me after really crummy random number rolls.

Personally, the book isn't that hard. Yeah, the Kleasá thing stinks, but the rest is fine. What I think is unfair is that at the very end where you fight the cave mantiz, I killed the thing in just one round. I feel like the choice should have been like: If you Kill the Kleasá in the first round of combat, or you evade after the first round: turn to 350.

Normally if you choose to evade a combat your opponent gets to inflict one round worth of damage on you, but you don't get a chance to strike your opponent. It may be that is what was intended here as well; however the qualifier "after one round" which is not normally present when the option to evade is given seems to imply that you do have to fight one full round (and then the Mantiz gets a free shot at you in round 2 while you are evading).
