Ok the stderr.txt in the Seventh Sense S Debug directory only shows up when I have the program running, but when I open it the file is empty. The stdout.txt only has this.

Do this: Click New Campaign, navigate to the New Order series, Click the Download button for book 21, click OK if it fails, click Back, click Quit in the main menu.

The confusing thing is, the same function that determines if the download failed or not gives the std output if it fails. One should follow from the other, but there is no output about the failed download, even though you get the message box in-game. Would make sense if you *didn't* get the "download failed" message box.

I'm trying something in the next patch.

Download that and do this: Backup the Documents\Seventh Sense folder somewhere, delete it, the start the debug version. It will create a new "write" directory somewhere (should be in %Appdata%\Project Aon\Seventh Sense). Create a new profile and try again with downloading and everything, then send me the stdout.txt contents. Also, can you tell me exactly what the Download Failed message box says?

You can copy stuff over from the old Documents\Seventh Sense folder afterwards.

New installs have a new location for the write directory now. Existing installs still work with the old one but if you are not having any problems then no action required.

Well whatever you did with this release worked. I clicked the download button got the book and covers. Now if you could just add in the expanded crit table and dual wield options, even though you don't like them much. Just does not make any sense to me when I have a 30 point combat advantage over an opponent to take damage. The download message failure was this.

I do not want to let new players hang themselves by selecting Gameplay rules that are 1. Imbalanced (Dual wielding) 2. Unrealistic (Dual wielding) 3. Regarding the Extended CRT, "realism" isn't the first word that comes to mind with the Lone Wolf combat system to begin with, so the Extended CRT doesn't necessarily improve on that, but only makes some of the already easy combats a little bit easier. Why should that be a Gameplay option? But, already you and Nym have expressed some interest in this one so I'm actually thinking of allowing this even on By-The-Book.

Regarding Duel wielding; you're the one who wanted realism? This one actually requires more than average of support in the source code which, I can tell you right now, I have zero interest in maintaining and won't hesitate to drop if it requires more work. Actually, with some of the new Hardcore mechanics I'm sure it's already broken in some way.

All that being said, and as I wrote in my previous post, everything is still available by manually editing the settings.txt file in the Appdata folder, for now....

Dual-wielding feels like cheating to me; there is absolutely no support for it being permitted in the books or other materials. Even if Lone Wolf is ambidextrous it is unrealistic that he could wield two weapons simultaneously as effectively as he could wield one weapon due to the extra concentration required, which would negate any advantage. Better to use a shield in the second hand (and the option is still available to keep all Special Items into the GM series if you wish).

Thanks for the explanation on why you have chosen to drop some rule options.

Perhaps the best compromise solution would be if somehow the new books could be made playable under Dave's original version of Seventh Sense. I have no idea how difficult that would be to do though and/or if it would require Dave's intervention.

It strikes me that there are (at least) two major use cases for something like Seventh Sense:

1) As a vanilla "reader" for the books, letting people play through them as they choose without having to keep track of inventory etc manually (which is the main issue with using the HTML files)
2) As an independent game, drawing from the books, but with its own unique features like achievements and leaderboards.

For the latter group, it makes a lot of sense to restrict customisation options to ones that don't invalidate (or trivialise) achievements, etc.
For the former group, on the other hand, it makes more sense to expand the customisation options to offer as wide a range of house rules as possible.

I don't know what Dave's original intention was, but I suspect a lot of the custom options were to support the first group.

My suggestion would be to keep the customisation options, but have a concept of a "casual" mode with achievements etc disabled, but all the customisation options available, as well as a "glory" mode with much more restrictive limits on customisation, but counting for official records and achievements...

I will make one general case for less customization: If you look at the Google Play Store reviews for Kai Chronicles, which is interesting because there are so many players new to the Lone Wolf series, really one of the only criticisms I've seen is that: "so far it's too easy". Of course, combat-wise the Kai series is trivial, but does it then make sense to have Gameplay rules, like Dual wielding, like the old Alternative armour rules, that completely trivialises the first several books, *especially* if those rules have no basis in realism (dual wielding / wearing armour should really make you worse at fighting, not better), *especially* if selecting them locks you out of interesting content in the game?

Any rules that people actually use or want are going to stay in some form. I might only be tempted to "hide" them by having them available only from the settings file like it is now, or at least not from the same menu that pops up every time you start a campaign. The in-game menu should be digestable for new players who aren't even going to know what they want, even among the reasonable rules if they haven't played before.

Some curation will always be needed.

From you or anyone playing with Custom rules, I would appreciate hearing what exactly you use so I can take that into account, or even what new rules you might want potentially.

I've not actually touched Seventh Sense for a few years - and when I did, I was straight by-the-book. One thing I can see being of interest is an "always 10" for combat for an "easy mode" (or "story mode").

You should try Seventh Sense S now if you haven't played since then, a lot has changed, but especially if you haven't played the New Order series before.
