Hi! Kinda new fan here. I read a couple of books 20 years ago and loved them, and I want to get on board with the new Definitive Editions now that I'm more fluent in English (my native language is Spanish and I don't trust any spanish publisher to release the whole collection at this point). Thing is, should I be worried for this new edition? From what I've read, publishing rights for Lone Wolf have been... complicated. I wouldn't want to start buying hardcover editions for 30€/book if later the publisher will stop at, say, book 11 or so. Is paperback Definitive Edition then the safer route if I want to have a nice collection? Or maybe I'm worrying too much? Also, I don't know which of the two (paperback / hardcover) is the more durable option for a book that constantly makes you handle it changing pages every time you read / play it. The things you raised have been my concern for the past 3 years. For both softcovers and hardcovers, you may buy them from bookdepository or blackwell. The books there, inclusive of postage costs, are cheaper than those at Magnamund.com, without including postage cost.

Also, I don't know which of the two (paperback / hardcover) is the more durable option for a book that constantly makes you handle it changing pages every time you read / play it. Welcome! First, don't worry about publishing rights: the books in Definitive Edition format are published by the estate of the author (namely, his son Ben). They already have plans to go further than just republishing the whole main gamebook series (like other series and other products). Seeing that the first few softcovers have been out of stock (new printing coming March 6th), this tells me that they are quite popular and that we shouldn't worry for the financial viability of the project for now. Secondly, if you don't want to pay too much, softcovers is the way to go as they are identical to the hardcovers (apart for book 1), with the exception of the cover (of course!) but also the map at the beginning of the book (in color for the hardcover and printed inside the dustjacket, in B&W for the softcover inside the actual book). I even think that one of the online stores (Book Depository IIRC) even offers free shipping worldwide. One thing to understand though is that hardcovers are available only through Holmgard Press' online shop ( link), so there's no possibility to avoid the shipping costs for them. I said that softcovers and hardcovers were identical except for book 1. That's because in 2007, Joe Dever released an extended version of that book (550 sections instead of 350) with many changes in the story (among other things, you take part in the battle at the monastery and there are new places to explore during your trek to Holmgard). And so, Holmgard Press decided to release this extended version as the hardcover version of book 1 while the original version is available as the softcover. There is no extended version in softcover or original version in hardcover. Thirdly, there is a Spanish publisher, Celaeno Books, that is currently planning to release at least the first five books of the series ( link). The project used a crowdfunding campaign that raised nearly four times what they were asking for ( link), so I believe these books will see the light of the day. Even if they don't print the rest of the series, at least you'll have the full Kai subseries in Spanish.

I was not very keen on collecting the Hardcover DE until I discovered it on Blackwell. For example, hardcover DE4 costs me £20 + £16 shipping to Singapore = £36 = S$68+ on Magnamund.com.
Blackwell sells it for just S$29+ including shipping cost!!! In fact, Blackwell is much cheaper than Bookdepository!!!

Wow, thank you very much! I was aware of the Celaeno editions but I'm more confident in the original release in english. I may go for the hardcovers in the end, wouldn't want to miss that extended edition or mix paperbacks with hardcovers in my future Lone Wolf shelf. Thanks again

Hoping for good things this month after many winter delays. Current schedule: 1 March: Paperback 4-5 6 March: Hardcover 6-7 ? March: Preorder 8-10 I think that normally, when a book is out in its hardcover format, the next ones are made available for pre-order immediatly. So March 6th is the release of books 6 & 7 hardcover, with books 8 to 10 should be made available for pre-order at the same time. April for the Kickstarter: link

Oh well, latest Newsletter confirms a delay for books 6 & 7 hardback. New dates: the new printer says March 23rd but Ben is more cautious and says April 6th.
However, paperbacks of 4 & 5 are coming on time, along with reprints of 1-3. They should be with the distributor in two weeks, and then on to the various retailers.
No news on books 8-10 though...

Thanks for the update. The date of the release of DE6 and 7 might not be 6 April 2023 as stated in the website. Who knows the release will be postposed to say 10 May 2023? This is what I think will take place in terms of the printing of hardcovers judging by the current pace of publication: DE6 to 8 in 2023 DE9 to 12 in 2024 DE13 to 15 in 2025 DE16 to 19 in 2026 DE20 to 23 in 2027 DE24 to 26 in 2028 DE27 to 29 in 2029 DE30 to whatever the final book is in 2030 ... well, that's if Magnamund could survive till 2030. I will be almost 50 years old then. 😣😌🙁

So, "with the distributor in two weeks"... How does this translate to an *actual shipping date*? Like when can I, the customer who has pre-ordered paperbacks 4 and 5 from Amazon, expect to have them on my doorstep?

I can't say but a few minutes ago, this was posted on the official Lone Wolf Facebook page: linkSo it shouldn't be long before you get them.

DE 8-9 hardcovers are available to pre-order from Blackwells at a discount with free shipping to US. About $30 less than ordering books 6-7 direct from Magnamund.

But i not gonna buy them. They will probably be printed in mid to late 2023, i.e. 3Q2023, judging from the recent delays...

The first five DE paperbacks are (finally) in stock at Blackwells with free shipping to the US. The rules for Sommerswerd sound absurd in the DE. I am selling away my DE1-3 softcovers. I have sold my DE1-5 hardcovers for a profit of 53sgd!
