New Players
If you're a new player, don't worry so much about avoiding combats, focus more on avoiding instant death. Book 1 is the exception.
If you are playing New order; Kai-Alchemy, Assimilance, Grand Huntmastery, and Elementalism are generally handy for this purpose. Experienced Players If you're doing a new playthrough avoid the first 3 books, they should be considered "training wheels" because of the items that they provide. Book 4 is a really fun place to start.

New Players: - Start with book 1, if possible. - Use a 1d10 instead of the RNT. - Take Sixth Sense and Healing. - Book 1: consult the map often and never venture away from your destination. - Book 2: Take Animal Kinship and make sure to get to Ragadorn with 22+ crowns. - Book 4: be very, very cautious of your surroundings. - Grey Star book 1: don't even bother playing a character with less than 15 CS.
Experienced: - Hoard consumable (Alether, Laumspur, etc) items for books 9-12. - Weaponmastery, Huntmastery, and Nexus is an ideal starting combo for book 6. Replace Nexus with Curing if starting a fresh character there. - Book 6: win the archery tournament. Bring an Alether and use Psi-surge if you have to. - Book 8: skip Tharro. The Grey Crystal Ring isn't worth the danger. - Book 10: avoid Cetza and the Isle of Ghosts if you have the Sommerswerd. - Grand Master: the new disciplines, Kai-Alchemy and Magi-Magic, are incredibly useful, although usually situations in which they come up will ask for either. MM can skip a nasty (and otherwise mandatory) boss fight in book 14. - New Order: Valiance is probably the most useful Kai weapon.
I could probably spend all day writing these.
