I put a bookmark in Book 31 at the beginning of Section 1. Look at the number of pages before the story even begins.
I put Book 1 next to it for comparison.
All that front matter is necessary, of course. We are dragging along a lot of history at this point. I'm pretty sure no one Earth will ever start the Lone Wolf series at Book 31, but the book wouldn't be complete otherwise. We need the front matter for the sake of tradition if nothing else.
Even so, do you remember how quickly Book 1 started? It was like, "Okay, listen. You just turned fourteen and every person you know has been savagely murdered. Do you want to take the left path or the right path?"

The thickness can be misleading: you are better to count the number of pages. Book 29 had two "versions" when originaly released: one thin and one fat, because they came from two different printers that used paper of different thickness but they had the exact same content and used the exact same layout. But one looks like it has twice the number of pages than the other one. Attachments:
