Gary Chalk's illustrations have a distinct "bulky" feeling to them which I've come to associate with the Lone Wolf series. It works really well in conjuction with Dever's writing.
However, he seems to have a habit - especially in the early books - of making the minions of evil shove their faces directly in the picture, taking up large proportions of it.

Gary Chalk, no competition. His artwork forever cemented in my mind the "look" of Lone Wolf and Magnamund. It never quite felt the same after he left, even though I like Brian Williams as well.

For me it'll always be Gary Chalk. His artwork was really unique, and to me so characteristic of the Lone Wolf series. Anyone know why he left? Him and Joe didn't really see eye to eye anymore. I think I remember Joe saying in an interview that Chalk thought himself worth more than he really was and asking for an unreasonable payment or something.

As taken from Joe Dever's interview in the Lone Wolf Club Newsletter New Year's Special 1993: My own personal opinion (and I'm surprisingly free with them; I wonder why I haven't commented before) is that while Gary Chalk's illustrations have a very distinctive quality to them, I think Brian Williams may just have the edge. And Peter Andrew Jones' covers are the best.

It is sad that it didn't work out for Joe and Gary. You never know - maybe Gary never wanted to sign on for such an extended project, or maybe his interests changed... or maybe it is just the sort of trouble you get when you try to put 2 alpha-males in the same space.
I like all the illustrators the best! But you know, I always was very fond of the cover-art on the US editions of the Lone Wolf books. Who did those?

Gary Chalk has become associated with the project to a huge degree, and many of the other illustrators who worked on Lone Wolf tried to stay true to that style.
I can't really say my favorite, I was never aware there was more than one.

Gary Chalk, of course. But I have a question for you. As far as I know all the international LW editions have the same interior artwork from the english original books. Right? But with only one exception. is this correct?

But with only one exception. is this correct? What is the exception you are talking about? I can tell you that in French, books 23 to 28 have no illustrations (maps were removed starting with book 20).

You do not answer my question...is this correct or not? The exception I know is Alejandro Colucci to one spanish edition. He made all the artwork again for the first 5 books.

You do not answer my question... Indeed, because I didn't know the answer, so that's why I was asking what was the exception, so that I could search on my side and try to help you find the answer... From what I understand, yes, he's the exception. Timun Mas, who republished the first five books in the early 2000s, called this guy from Uruguay to illustrate the books.

Of course thanks for the searching, because I´m very interested on this subject. I have received a note today "In Italy they made new illustrations to certain editions and who knows if there are more in the eastern countries"...I do not know. If anyone got data and examples of this kind of artwork, I appreciate that.

First time I hear about that regarding the Italian editions... Maybe they were in fact talking about the cover artwork? Vincent Books is currently reprinting the series with totally new covers that Holmgard Press is reusing for the DE. Some special limited editions were also made by Vincent Books with different cover artwork (6, 29, 30 and 31). The original printing of the NO series in Italian also uses cover illustrations that are different than the original one of the English edition, although not at all related to the story inside the books. Check this thread if you haven't so yet if you want to see more: linkAs for some Italian editions to have a different interior artwork, maybe an Italian reader will be able to confirm if it is the case but from what I know, I don't think it exists.

Yes, I thought exactly the same thing. I know nothing about the italian interior illustrations. Those covers, yes. Probaby, I´m going to ask to the italians.

I did a little research and found something that might be interesting to you. Last winter, Celaeno Books launched a crowdfunding to republish the LW gamebooks in Spanish, starting with the first 5 books. They rose €97,000+ (on a goal of 25,000). The various stretch goals had some interesting rewards but five of them were the creation of an exclusive illustration by Juapi Coffee Artist ( link), one for each of the gamebook. I'm not sure if it will be included directly inside the gamebook (like we have illustrations linked directly to a specific section in English) or if it will put somewhere else in the book, but if it is the case, this Spanish version will have some exclusive artwork (not a lot but still, that is something.) The crowdfunding page can be found here (the mention of the first exclusive artwork is made at the stretch goal of €33,000): www.verkami.com/projects/31653-lobo-solitario-la-coleccion-de-librojuego?fbclid=IwAR2XzdBU1qgNaRxu235yOipGwyH_0KN1WR4IYCmgBFldXw-zB9TQ6idQnP8
