I got away with having a Shield in Book 13 by shoving it into my backpack in Book 12 and then stowing it in the Kai Monostary as a Backpack Item.

In a pinch, I suppose you could also store it in your beltpouch.

It was painful, but with the Magnakai Disciplines of Curing, Nexus and Arsemastery I just managed to do it.
