I came here to ask this same question. I'm glad to find it has already been asked and answered.
I was a teenager when I first read the books, but I'm a middle-aged man now with kids and a mortgage. There is a limit to how hard I'm willing to think about puzzles in adventure books, so after a while I just figured the answer to the first puzzle had to have a single-digit answer and I solved it with brute force so I could get to the end of the book.
