With many of us having stated that they don't have anyone to play the RPG with, I had a somewhat radical idea. What about playing online? Communication could occur through the typed medium of IRC, and I'm sure someone could whip up a program to handle dice rolling and such. We could have someone be the DM as well. Is this stupid? Can it work? I have absolutely no idea how to play pen-and-paper RPGs, so I've no real idea whether I'm talking rubbish or not.

Its entirely possible,
You would make your characters at home, The DM would post text and instructions online and you'd follow them then post your results.
I was thinking of running a campaign. I've been a DM in the past for years, and i know alot about lone wolf. If anyones interested post and let me know.

I'd be interested, but first I need to pass my final exams, then get the book, then learn the rules... But yeah eventually I'd be interested in something like this.

I'd be interested too, although it might be tough trying to find a time where everyone in up-teen time zones can all get together on the IRC channel.

What I'd like to see is a Lone Wolf MUSH, via telnet. For those who are unfamiliar with MUSHes (and MUCKs, MUDs, etc), it's a Multi User Shared Hallucination, a raoundabout way of saying 'online role-playing game'. They are text-based, so don't take up a lot of bandwidth, and they're free, made just for the enjoyment of playing the games. Usually, MUSHes will have character creation rules for new characters, a set area to play in, with a plethora of rooms and places to explore. Good ones have a staff of game masters and coders that will run adventures for the players, along with the normal player interaction. MUSHes cover all kinds of genres, including sci-fi, fantasy, modern, horror... just about anything. And because the RPG intensive ones have character creation online and solid rules for combat, there's little 'cheating'. I curently play on a couple of MUSHes, a Supers game (using the Mutants and Masterminds system [wonderful game, BTW]), Shadowrun, and a D&D MUSH. Personally, with the D20 RPG coming out any day now, I'd be thrilled beyond compare if someone took the time and effort to build a Lone Wolf MUSH. As it has simpler rules than standard D&D, I don't foresee it to be a big programming issue. Any MUSH enthusiasts out there? Nerethel

A MUSH wouldn't be that hard to build; as I mentioned on another thread the only problem would be getting a connection over which to run it. I'm not sure my family would appreciate me tying up the home DSL with a MUSH and I'm about to lose my precious Ethernet. But, building it would be doable; the only question is whether you're looking for more of a combat-based DIKU-style codebase or a true mush of the TINY variety. Yeah, I'm such a nerd.

hey, um any chance you can tell me where I can find these MESH's? I've been looking for about a million years to find a good irc rpg, D&D (also hopping for a star wars rpg one) based or otherwise.
so could you post where you found these MESH's or just email me at plzkillmenow@hotmail.com
I will be ever in your debt.

I recommend New Moon as a pretty excellent MUD. eclipse.cs.pdx.edu, port 7680.
Other than New Moon, I've not found a MUD that I really like.

Your first step should be to download a client. I use SimpleMU (do a web search), and it does well for me. Next, you need to connect to a MUSH (or MUD, etc.). I go to a handful that I like, which I can share the addresses for, if you want.
SimpleMU will have a menu button called 'MUD List' which will list a buttload of MUSHes for you. Most are poopoo, but there are some jewels in the bunch.
E-mail me if you would like a list of addresses that I like.
