Link to Helghast fight: homepage.ntlworld.com/outspaced/PDFs/Zipp_Dementia_-_Helghast_Fight.pdf(I could've sworn I had a topic about this already... oh well.) In any case, the improved Helghast fight from book 2 is well on its way to completion. I begin the actual writing today. If anyone is interested in trying it out when it's completed, drop your email here, or PM me with it, and you'll be the first to recieve it (after Outspaced does his brilliant editing job).

Very close now, I have 8 more sections to write, and then I review the whole thing "tightening the screws" as I go. And then it's off to Outspaced! The Helghast will be out in time for Christmas, and makes a great gift for the whole family.

Pity Helghast are a bugger to wrap. Especially if there's a spear poking out their midriff.

The secret is to disguise it, maybe as a spearholder shape.
I'll be the first to offer to playtest the fight before the full Christmas release : )

Here's a sneak preview of the Helghast fight, some random sections (note this is the unedited version, also these aren't the right page numbers, of course. I wouldn't give you that kind of advantage ^_^)
1 The carved spear is made of metal and covered with runes in a language unknown to you. It is sunk deep into the man’s chest and you fear that he will die from his wound. You wrap your hand around the shaft, noticing that it is warm to the touch. As you carefully pull the weapon from the man’s body, he arches his back and gives a long rasping sigh.
You are bending down to examine his wound when you hear a loud buzzing in your ears and your head begins to throb. You try to ignore the feeling but it only gets worse. Suddenly the pain increases dramatically, so much that you cry out, dropping the spear. Your vision goes blurry and you begin to shake uncontrollably. Your head feels like it’s being crushed by invisible hands.
2 You press yourself into the middle of a patch of shrubs and crouch down as the Helghast comes near. Its hoarse breathing is like rusty metal drawn across stone. You feel sure that the Helghast can sense your presence. It begins to search through the undergrowth, coming near to your position. You hold your breath and pray for Kai to keep you hidden from your enemy.
3 You swing your spear in a wide arc as the Helghast approaches, cutting easily through its midriff. Though it lets out a cry, it doesn’t cease its attack and slashes at you with its deadly claws, slicing open your arm as you move to block.
4 The terrifying undead screeches and launches itself at you. You hold the spear above your head like a javelin, calling on your abilities and teachings to guide you. Then, with a prayer to the Sun God Kai on your lips, you take aim.
5 You roll to one side just in time to dodge the attack. You stand and prepare to defend against the Helghast’s next assault. A spear has two main forms of attack. You can slash at your opponent, which is more likely to hit, but would cause little damage, or you can use the spear point to stab. A stabbing attack is more powerful, but the Helghast may be fast enough to dodge it, leaving you open to its counter attack.
If these options don’t appeal to you, you can concentrate on dodging the attack and getting into a better position.
6 You do not have time to dodge before the Helghast is on top of you. You raise your spear to strike it, but it slices at your wrist with its claws and knocks the spear from your hands. It then lowers its skeletal mouth and sinks its fangs into your throat, tearing at your jugular.
7 Often in your adolescent fantasies you’d imagined yourself taking on hordes of the Darklords’ minions and prevailing to come home to a warm fire and the praise of the monastery. Now there is no fire, nor praise, to return to. You have no time for such thoughts, however. The Helghast will not wait for you to attack, you must prepare for its assault .
You wonder, however, if you can beat such a foe. It may be smarter to make a run for the forest. Perhaps there you can escape your opponent. You could also try launching an attack first. The Helghast is unarmed. Going on the offensive could be the fastest way to end this battle.

In the mean time, er.... I'll hold a Q and A session!
Not that that's any different from what I always do, but... now it's official!
So, er... any questions? About anything? Even non Helghast related?
EDIT: Just realized the Helghast was started back in September, so that makes it a three month project. Feels like a three year project, though.
I'll be starting on the tentacle-beasty from Caverns of Kalte straight away, at least with the planning stages. I'll probably take a bit of a break before I jump into it with earnest. I find I need time to let my creativity restore.

I'd be intersted in knowing just which fights you plan on improving...(assuming the project continues until all books are tweaked) Chasm of Doom: Barraka? Shadow on the Sand: Haakon? Kingdoms of Terror: Roark? Undead Summonations? Dakomyd? Castle Death: Zadha? Maze Monsters? Jungle of Horrors: Gnaag Helghast? Silver Swamp Python? Cauldron of Fear: Kimah? Psi-Ghoul? Dungeons of Torgar: Not really a boss fight here, so...Ziran? Tagazin? Prisoners of Time: Lots here...Chaosmaster? Villains? Vonotar? Masters of Darkness: Another biggie...the Xagath? Kraagenskull? Taktaal? Gnaag? Plauge Lords of Ruel: Lots of possibilities here...probably Exterminus, but how about that weird tentacle thing and the big cave monster? Captives of Kaag: Probably big bucktoothed monster. How about the Nadziranim? Darke Crusade: Magnaarn? Legacy of Vashna: Shamath? Kadak? Deathlord of Ixia: Tagazin, mark 2? Ixiataaga? Dawn of the Dragons: Been ages since I read this one...Vaxagore? Wolfs Bane: Another interesting one, since the fight with Wolf's Bane is already kooky. Curse of Naar: Jeez....too many to count.

Also, I volunteer to write the Altan fight...
If you would like to aim for the bulls-eye, turn to 231. If you would like to screw up Altan's aim at the last second with Nexus, turn to 56. If you'd like to give Altan a splitting headache with Psi-Surge, turn to 35. If you would like to chop off one of Altan's arms, turn to 5.

yes
yes, you'd think for a book this big there'd be at least two fights, but no, just the one.
no, no, yes. (and maybe a ten section fight for Altan, for laughs)
Zahda
Just the Gnaag Helghasts
Just Kimah
Past this point, I have yet to read the rest of the Magnakai series and need to reread the Grand Master Series. I can say that if any books would have multiple boss fights, it would be books 11 and 12, with The Chaosmaster and the Villains in book 11, and lots of fights in book 12, including all the Darklords.
My current goal is to just make it through the kai series. I'll feel pretty accomplished if I do that.

I know you plan to start balancing for the Sommerswerd in each fight - are there any other items you will be including? Will there be items that don't actually get used otherwise that will become useful again (like the vordak gem did in the gorgaz fight)?
