Hey, what does everyone think of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie coming out?

Am very interested and so is my wife. Although I've never read them [ ], I have gotten a kick out of many quotes from it and songs about Marvin the Paranoid Android. Haven't seen much as far as previews except a poster at the theater the other night along with an exploding planet preview before a movie, but am definitely intrigued!

I'm in the same situation than you Rel: never read the books (I didn't even knew that it was based on books until recently), but I'm very intrigued.

Well the movie will contradict the books in many places, but this is how Douglas Adams wanted it. I highly reccomend the books, especially the first two.

Definitely looking forward to it. BBC Radio 4 recently broadcast a dramatised adaptation of Life, the Universe and Everything with most of the original cast from 25 years ago ( ) which was very funny. The radio adaptations of the remaining two books should follow later this year, no doubt, cleverly situated to focus interest on the film. It's very easy to complain when a film changes something from the book, but not so easy if it was the author himself who changed it for the adapted screenplay. And looking at the comedy talent, Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent will be fine, Stephen Fry as the Voice of the Guide is brilliant casting, and the supporting cast including Bill Bailey, Alan Rickman, and Steve Pemberton looks solid. It will hopefully be another good British Film that isn't a drippy "romantic comedy" about rich people (last year's excellent Shaun of the Dead notwithstanding). On a related topic, this year should also see the film version of the black comedy TV series The League of Gentlemen, which I am also looking forward to.

28 days later, you mean? I thought that film was good up until
SPOILER they reached the army scenes. THen it got away from the horror and survival aspect and just sorta became good guy versus bad guy. My two cents: it would've been cooler if, after reaching the army guys, the zombies break past the defenses and it turns out there's a tunnel that runs underground leading away from the mansion to the country or a helipad or something. Then the characters have to make it through the tunnel with the zombies behind them. THAT would've scared me more than a bunch of pedafiles.

Well the movie will contradict the books in many places. And what else is new with any book-to-screen reproduction?

Very true. However, it is rare that the author actually WANTS that, and that's why I pointed it out. It certainly put my nerves to rest. Now I don't have to point out to everyone sitting in the theatre around me how this wasn't supposed to happen, and the line they took out here, and the fact that Zaphod is supposed to have a second head... etc etc etc
(yeah he does have a second head in the movie, but it's underneath the first and quite disturbing, rather than to the side, as it is in the TV series and books)
