Right, but he sort of "lives" at the King's palace in between books, and could easily store stuff there. Again, it's not explicitly stated by the books, so in a "by the book" campaign, you would not have the option to store stuff.

This is again a bit old, but my problem is relevant to this thread: In "by the book" mode, I cannot access storage in any book, including Book 5, where it is explicitly introduced (at least for coins and special items). I actually started another game to figure out how storage even worked (to be sure I wasn't missing a button somewhere), and in the process destroyed my save game because I hit "new campaign" rather than going down to the profiles option. This was most upsetting, and leads to a suggestion I guess I'll drop here: a warning on the "new campaign" screen that says "this will delete all saved data for [profile name] - to make a new profile use the "profiles" button from the main menu" or something to that effect.
