I'm creating a computer game in Java (portable to most major platforms) involving Lone Wolf. I read some of your opinions about what you'd like to see a Lone Wolf CRPG be like. Unfortunately, 3d graphics are out of the question for now but I was thinking maybe a 2D top down perspective a la Adventure Construction Kit. Has anyone ever used Adventure Construction Kit (ACK)? www.mozomedia.com/ack/adventure-creation-kit/My game would be a lot like that only oriented to Lone Wolf. I'd love to hear peoples' opinions and if they would be interested in a project of this sort. My first idea was to create a simple demo to get things going, release it, and have it playtested to get feedback so I have something to go on when making the SERIOUS effort to create a Lone Wolf CRPG.

Seeing as how no one seems interested, this project is canceled for now.

Seeing as how no one seems interested, this project is canceled for now. Don't be disheartened. For my part, I've seen a lot of these projects come and go so my enthusiasm for them has been stunted. It's hard to finish even a basic video game on your own. If you're going to do it, i suggest doing something original that you can actually market towards webspace and an internet community.

I followed my own recommendation that I give to all aspiring game-writers: Don't even mention anything until you have a product that people can try out. It doesn't have to be polished, but should have the essentials of gameplay and basic graphics, etc. That way people can give you real feedback on what you're doing, instead of just feedback on the idea.
Great ideas are a dime a dozen. Actual code shows that you're committed and have spent time developing an idea. So, to tell you the truth, I'd love to see a project like yours come to fruition. However, for you to cancel the project simply because no-one responded to your thread says to me you probably don't have the gumption to stick with it once the coding gets underway...

Zipp: I have decided to do something original in my own world.
Dave: Glad to hear it is interesting to you. You're absolutely right about actual code being more a more substantial thing to comment on. And I agree with your assessment about "gumption to stick with it". That's why I have decided to work on this project privately until I have something to show.
Like I said though, I am not doing it in the Lone Wolf world anymore so I want post any more about it on these forums. It wouldn't be right for me to try and hijack the forum if it's not LW.

Oh please do post about it, or at least say when it's finished!

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting about it in these forums, as long as you've got something to show. Maybe not the place for daily updates but the project, after all, was inspired at some level by Lone Wolf and I, for one, would be very interested in seeing it if you ever come up with something substantial enough to show around.

I am a little torn as to what format this game should be.
Would like to hear people chime in on this one:
A game like:
* ULTIMA (Adventure Construction Kit -like [see 1st post for link])
or
* INTERACTIVE FICTION (text accompanied by static images with buttons to press to make choices in the game-- this can be augmented by special combat or other types of mini games-- if anyone remembers HyperCard it would be like something created with that)
or
* 3D LABRYNTHE (might + magic, wizardy, ultima underworld, etc)
?

Which will be easiest for you? It's good not to put up too many barriers to completing such a project.

I vote - ultima-style! Those games rock. I've tried my hand at a couple like that. I never finished any of them, but I had some great "demos".

Well actually a set of interconnected webpages forming a LW style adventure would be easiest. I can even provide the illustrations. This could be parlayed into a stand-alone application or applet. But my mind is still open to suggestions. Ultima would take longer to complete than Interactive Fiction. Perhaps I could develop my game world in the Interactive Fiction and once a quest was hammered out I'd have the grist to make a Ultima-style adventure from that foundation. I encourage discussion about this!

My vote is for Interactive Fiction, mainly because I too have entertained the idea of creating a Lone Wolf -esque adventure, in TADS (2). But then I saw there was a TADS 3 out, started looking into it, got confused by how different it was from 2, and scared myself off.
I suppose I should just go back to thinking about TADS 2...
