Hi, There are a great many "house" rules on dying - really, depending how you would like to play. Rounding them up into a simplified version, here are the major choices that I am aware of:
1. Start again from book 1 (or the first book of the series you are playing - so book 6 is another common restart point, but if you restart at book 6 you could be deemed to lose benefits from earlier books depending on options below.)
2. Keep a safe copy of your character sheet from the end of each book - so you always restart the book in the same state, but you can repeat any choices you make such as your new skill, starting equipment, etc.
3. (hard core) - if you restart the current book, you lose everything from previous books (I don't recommend this one personally until you have played through all the books at least once!)
I have always favoured option 2 - but have also been known to go back to book 1 as you will find you can finish that book very quickly after a couple of play-throughs!
Only once (many years ago) have I made it to the end of the grand master - I think I may have bent the rules a little in my younger days in order to experience the story!
The different software playing aides you will find on AON all have subtly different rules around this as well.

In Lone Wolf Saga, I am using rule 2 So every time you finish a book, your current stats and inventory are "frozen", and, from then after, every time you start the next book, the frozen stats are reloaded as current stats. At the moment, my software doesn't permit to undo the choice of the last discipline, and I know this is one thing I will have to add ASAP GDV
