...and if you are a Scion-Kai (Magnakai-ranks) you can add 4 points to your combat skill. This improves your weaponmastery. But could you use this for a bow? I think this is acually a good question. After this discussion I think OmegaFlareX is just right with his succinct statement. It seems that Joe indeed had left the mastery bonus intentionally at the same level. But Loyalty Bonus applies as always. In view of this, I think for missiles we have to differentiate between the bonus to CS and the bonus to random numbers. If there were ever another opportunity to use the bow with CS as in the archery contest against Altan, we should be able to add our normal mastery bonus (+3, +4, +5, whatever) to the CS. But when adding to random numbers to find out the result of a shot, we could only add the stated +3 bonus effect from our mastery with the bow. (Adding the Mentora bonus if applicable.)

How I do it: Starting in Magnakai books, it's +3. Upon reaching Mentora, this goes to +5, and I usually have the bow, making it +8. I can't imagine it getting any sicker than that! If I were starting GM, I would keep the loyalty bonuses and have a total of +8 when using the SBoD. Other than that, if I were starting a new character from #13, I'd assume the +3 bonus with bows; after all, no loyalty bonuses if you don't finish the books! I think this is meant to give newbies a bonus for taking the skill, but not as much as if you'd read the whole series. All the more reason to have read the previous books! ;D

That's how I do it as well, Relenoir. Well, except for the starting afresh from Book 13 bit, but only because I've never started afresh from Book 13.

But if I were, I'd be sure to do it just that way! Start from book 13 and miss out on all those cool magic items in books 1-12? I'd have to be nuts. . .

To be honest, I'm just starting the Grandmaster-Series.. And I only got a higher CS than a new (started at book 13) Grandmaster because of possessing the Sommerswerd AND rolled max. CS at book one! If you dont roll a very high CS at starting the earlier series you would probably end up with a lower CS at book 13 than a newly created Grandmaster at book 13 despite all the nice magic items to carry over to the Grandmaster series!? New Grandmasters start with a minimum BASE of 25 CS? - That's a higher base than a regularly played LW from the earlier series can ever have at book 13!

I made some calculations in this thread about that problem: projectaon.proboards30.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1095118812&start=0Look at my second post.

Black Cat, got your point. My own calculations but would suggest a bonus of +10 to the current CS of a Grand Master who has finished the Magnakai quest: The difference between old (10) and new (25) CS 'base-Base' is 15 minus the +5 obtained through Lore-Circles = 10. But I think the rules are clear. Saying to "take over your CS score" to the Grandmaster series. Of course you can adjust your CS by any calculation but it's clearly a 'house-rule'. If I remember right JRD did say (in a Newsletter or interview..) that loyalty bonus applies when changing to another series but bonus from Disciplines do not stack... so there is no indication of any 'hidden' bonus to CS when changing from the Magnakai to Grandmaster series IMO. If someone DO have a indication for this I would be glad to hear about it.
