I played the French version of Book 22, The Buccaneers of Shadaki, when I found it in a school library while doing supply teaching. Forgetting the fact that the book is basically a novel with a few choices along the way, I have a specific question about an item. After defeating the evil tribal shaman (after the encounter with the vampire/energy-being who kills your horse), you receive three objects. In the French version, they're described as a potion/herb which can restore 10 EP, an Eye which can slay/subdue serpents, and a Talisman which increases your CS by 9 points. Now wait a minute -- that thing's more powerful than the Sommerswerd ! Since I'm sure that's a translation mistake, can anyone give me the original properties of this object ? +9 EP perhaps ?

Hehe, I was surprised too when I saw this, but, hey, what a nice bonus, so don't complain! Talking with people on these forums, I found out that, in the original version of the book, this item gives only 2 CS of bonus.

It was called the 'Talisman of Defiance', and like BC said, it was only a +2 bonus to CS. Of course, that comes in incredibly handy, moving you up a whole column in the combat results table. Speaking of these items, did anyone else ever find an opportunity to use the Eye of Lhaz to control venomous serpents? I didn't, but have only been through the NO books once.

I never got the opportunity to use it myself. Maybe it was planned to be used in one of the last 4 unwritten books, or maybe it is truly a red herring.  |

Wow! +9CS! Comparable to Ulnarian when used underwater! (just joking, can't remember myself as I play TBOS halfway) But, yeah, throughout the books, nothing beats Deathstaff, yet.. I mean, if Deathstaff consumes -5EP, it is still OK compared to Helshezag used more than 5 rounds (meaning lost more than -5EP, right?) I just encounter Deathstaff in TLOV, PA version. However, it is not feasable to use Deathstaff there.I never got the opportunity to use it myself.
