Confusion about map locations and population

When I played the first book of Lone Wolf I used the map of Sommerlund. The map (Sommerlund Card set 1) which was used by me should help me in my decisions about the directions.
But when I left the ruins of the kai monastry I went to northeast and arrived in the Raumas temple and also Fogwood. Both locations are shown on the Sommerlund map in different locations: Raumas temple in southeast und Fogwood on the western side and far away. Now I'm still wondering about discrepancy here. Has anyone an idea or are the maps from card sets not canon work from Joe Dever?
Something similar happened to me when I switched later to book 2 of Lone Wolf. Here I checked in the roleplaying supplement the size of the populations to get a better feeling about Durenor. In Magnamund companion I get the Info that 96000 inhabitants live in Durenor. But when I checked my cards again from card set I got the info of 656000 Ulnarians. That's seven times more as described. Quite confusing...

The explanation is the following : retconning.
When Joe Dever worked on the Lone Wolf Adventure Game and the Maps of Magnamund Collection, he realized the populations given in the Magnamund Companion were far too low, especially when considering the number of big cities in all of these countries AND the necessary population of farmers around to feed them. 96,000 inhabitants for Durenor whereas Hammerdal is supposed to be one of the biggest human cities in Magnamund simply didn't work. So he decided to increase the populations for most countries of Magnamund. The new canon populations are thus those given in the Maps of Magnamund Collection, and they'll be reused as such when Holmgard will republish an expanded version of the Magnamund Companion. But still, you can decide to use the ancient ones if it fits more your roleplaying sessions
