Hence the jokey Canadian term for the US people: "Statesians". It's a great term and should be used more often!

I have never heard of that term; "stasian" and refering to the States as the United States in stead of America, is just becuase that is the name, not because Homer (created by a Canadian by the way) calls us US Jr, is in no way insult based.
But of course, the US is not the only country like that. Take the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (proper name)... no one refers to UKanians, only British even thought that does not apply to Northern Ireland.

Of course British applies to Northern Ireland. The islands aren't known as the British Isles for nothing. Technically of course, Eire is a part of the British Isles, but not since 1916 has it been a part of Britain.

1922, if my history serves, the Irish Free State came into being, not 1916. And the Brithish Isles is now a contested term, some people do not use it anymore, using the oh so user freindly term "atlantic archipalgeo" (those are useually pretty left wing scholars though) British generally refers to British on mainland Britian (note to people not in UK: the Brits call the Island the mainland, something that cought me off guard when I came here), to call an Irish person British would be insulting to them. I am currently studying for my PhD in the politics of regional and national identity in the UK and Canada and find this sort of stuff absolutely fascinating, you gave a very English resoponse to British identity. BUT... I do not want this forum to become too similar to what I spend the vast vast majority of my time on (as Dusk Fox reminds us, this forum is to ESCAPE work) so please, lets get back to LW! Al

Oh, I know it's not an insult (though I had to re-read the statement a few times to figure out what you meant--you may want to take a few extra seconds to make statements like that... well, intelligible)--we call it the United States, too, some of the time. It's just amusing to me how much minor controversy it causes. As for Homer... he is a very funny, very dumb man created by a man from OREGON, not Canada. Sorry--no points this round for the man from America, Jr.

Sorry--no points this round for the man from America, Jr. I guess that what he meant is that Matt Groening based the character of Homer Simpson on his own father, Homer Groening, who was Canadian. That's according to Wikipedia who actually never mentions that Matt was born in the USA. It just says that he grew up in Oregon. FUN FACT: Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and Abraham are the real names of Matt's relatives. He even named his own sons Homer and Abe.

Yeah, but IMDb has his birthplace listed, and it was Oregon.
So the original Homer was Canadian, hmm? Not that you can tell from all the shouting of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" given anything remotely resembling an opportunity to shout out three letters.

Don't get used to it. I am, by nature, a dissenter.
You know... in addition to being a jester, a cheater, and a reaper.
