Ah, so I'm having a little problem here... I've got the Freeway Warrior serie recently. It's roughly the same fighting system than Lone Wolf, with a few changes. One of these changes is the result tables, which are slightly different. And one thing that make me wonder, is that the results seems more or less random... For example, with the +11 ratio, if you make a 8, you inflict 6 and take 2, while if you make a 7, you inflict 16 points and take 0... I've looked, and it's not just two rows that have been inverted, as such unlogical results are mutliples. So, I'm asking for the specialists here - Are these tables messed up, due to the print, and the "real ones" in other prints are more logical ? - Is this voluntaree, in order to make for more randomness in the fight ? - What did you do when playing this gamebook serie ? (as for me, I plan to use the combat tables from Lone Wolf, as I don't really like these random results, but I'd like to know if you did use some other way ^^)

They appear to have mixed them around a bit, possibly to make the results "appear" more randomized.

And harder. Cal Phoenix loses EP in just about every round of combat.

Yep, quite harder. Not only Cal lose more HP, he also inflict less, which means that the fights last longer. Anyway, I figured that the lines were mixed a bit, but I didn't liked it, so well, I took my Photoshop and made a bit of easy editing, replacing the lines in the "correct" order, which give this :

Man. Cal must get the crap beaten out of him frequently.

He certainly does. Also be aware that his healing abilities are crap. You start out with a limited supply (random number plus two) of medikits which heal just 3EP each, so you will run out. I've said it before and I've said it again, Highway Holocaust is brutal. The ultimate in "death by random number".

He should prepackage his ass so it's more convenient for his enemies to hand it to him daily.

Yeah, I seem to remember having trouble with Freeway Warrior. I really got into the series though. Actually the first book I read, The Omega Zone, I didn't think was so great, but California Countdown (that was the last book wasn't it?) I thought was very good.

I keep the tables because it makes sense. Cal isn't a powerful warrior who can decapitate 3 people with a single blow. Also, book 1 is brutal. The first time I died, i got hit by a car and fell into lake worth. The second time, I rolled slightly better on that same situation and got the middle result. Guess what? It was another skill roll. I botched that one too. Seriously!!!
