I’m re-reading (re-playing?) the Cauldron of Fear, and believe it or not, I’d never gone the route that takes me before the Magistrate previously. Usually I either just find Chiban directly or escape from prison, but this time I’m playing through and leaving no option unchecked (I don’t play this one very often, so I’ve been curious as to what I’m missing.
Spoilers below, though I’m sure they’re wholly unnecessary--they lead to a question, so please do read:
Imagine my surprise when I find that the Magistrate is Gwynian the Sage! I remember someone stating he was in this book, but I’d paid it little mind, and had only later realized I’d never seen him there. This is likewise compounded by the change-over in art, as Gwynian goes from looking like a bearded midget to looking like Caiphas from “the Passion of the Christ.”
Anyhow, Gwynian states that he is the last of the Sages of Lyris, which blindsided me as I thought that order was… you know… larger. Since I can’t remember anyone making mention of them in further books, are the Sages just permanently snuffed out like that, with the last one now the Magistrate of Tahou?
And... here's a line in black, just so no one thinks I forgot to finish this post.

Ahah! Good question. Remember in The Kingdoms of Terror when you meet Gwynian? You have to escape through a secret tunnel because a mob is running into the library (Section 6). I'd guess the evil sages slaughtered the innocent sages, except Gwynian, who obviously escaped, leaving him alone.
I think that sounds about right, anyway. Anyone have any other (better!) ideas?

Spoilers
In Book 9, Gwynian states:
"My home, the Halls of Learning in Varetta, was destroyed by a fire set by agents of the Darklords. Like yourself, I am a sole survivor, the last of my order."
Lone Wolf meets him again in Book 18 when he returns to Varetta. Gwynian has returned to the city and has rebuild his order back to its old glory.

I had forgotten all about this as well, having only played Cauldron once. All I remembered was that by the time the New Order comes around, the Sages are around again.

I did a quick check of Book 18 after reading this. Gwynian appears but I couldn't find where he says that he has rebuilt the Sages.
NS.

OK, maybe Gwynian didn't rebuild the order himself, but it had been rebuilt by the time of Book 18:

Well, I'm glad to read that they were eventually restored. I was pretty sad there when I thought they were no more.

Heh. Well their destruction would make Tyrenis's position untenable In our canon on TotS (24 years after Book 24), work on the Gwynian Memorial Hall has just been completed. I don't know how that ties in with the Halls of Learning though (my goof). NS.
