As I think about the few items Joe allowed us to carry over into the GM series, I wonder about the shield. I mean, as far as things went, it was probably a pretty standard shield, easily obtainable from any Sommlending armory, which leads to this question: Why can't I use it anymore in the GM books? That extra +2 CS could be really freakin' useful against certain enemies. It's not like it's some special magical item that you are extremely fortunate to come across. IT'S A FREAKING SHIELD!!! Probably one of the most standard pieces of battle equipment. Why shouldn't this one be allowed in the later books?

For that matter, I wondered why Joe limited the Special Items when going into 13 at all. I mean, if I am a fool and I want to keep my Port Bax ticket as one of my 12 items, why not let me keep it and be happy?
The smallest things cause me joy... don't take that away from me!

Maybe Joe was trying to keep a certain range of combat points? Or maybe he was simplifying for all us fools that did bring five hundred special items into the GM quests. Maybe this was his way of saying, "okay guys, here's all you'll need" and maybe on the side he was sighing contentedly that he didn't have to any longer write around loopholes gained from owning seventeen different types of gems that can do this and that and this all over again.

As with all things, I believe in letting common sense be my guide.
Take the Port Bax ticket, or any key you find. I probably wouldn't nix a special item just for something this small. They'd probably fit in a pocket. But you couldn't squeeze in 12 keys into one pocket. On the other hand, you couldn't keep 12 items that were all weapons, even though the limit was 12 items.
Maybe it'd complicate things, but I divide them into pocket sized and carry-on size. Maximum maybe 4 pocket sized, 6 carry-on size, and so on. Or I'd sacrifice a backpack item or two to make space.
I believe gamebooks should add to pleasure and fun, not detract from it. Lone Wolf's rules - indeed most gamebook rules - are easier and good to go from the start. Compare this to the old RPGs like AD&D. lots of bookkeeping, scorekeeping, reference cards, and so on.
Obviously, there will be people attracted to one, the other, or both, depending on personality and interest. I myself tired of the snail crawl of AD&D real quick. I'm going to order the Lone Wolf RPG mainly because it's Lone Wolf. Who knows? Maybe RPGs have simplified over the years.

This is a good point. I always carried all my keys whenever possible... it was an item that caused you to say, "what if I need this bronze key several books later and it opens a treasure chest to some fantastic treasure?"
Keys I thought were poorly thought out, though, since sometimes they are special items, sometimes they are backpack items and sometimes they don't say at all. I always thought that a key as a backpack item seemed like a weird idea (that would be a BIG key!). But that is if you are as picky as I am... why not count 4 keys as one backpack item? That might be more like it...
Now on the other hand, you might just have one REALLY BIG key! Some villians like that... do they ever do ANYTHING on a small scale?
It was somewhat nice to be able to take a deep breath and say, "Ah, Joe says I can really get rid of all these keys once and for all. GOODBYE!
And yet, wouldn't it be cool if in Book 19 you came across just such a certain metal box that could only be opened by a Silver Key... and somehow you still had it after all this time... and the Packrat called Lone Wolf was suddenly validated after all his years of hoarding junk.

StoneCold,
It really makes you wonder: how many pockets does Lone Wolf have? Maybe the answer is 12!

Ah, if only the packrat got ahead in life.
Yeah, I held onto myself thinking: someday this will be useful again... someday...
EDIT: Um, I meant, held onto my keys.

StoneCold, It really makes you wonder: how many pockets does Lone Wolf have? Maybe the answer is 12! Well Sol, Here's what I figure. Let's say two pockets, with two pocket items for each. When I say pocket items I mean things like keys, pendants, or tickets. So that's a total of four. Not too unreasonable!

Actually, tunics (depending on design) usually had two large pockets on either side of the inside of the tunic. Of Lone Wolf's littel knick-knacks, he could at least hold 6 in each pocket, equaling twelve.
By the way, can you carry over Special Items gotten in the Grand Master Quests into other Grand Master Quests? Is that list only for the Kai and Magnakai?
Oh, and Ronan, what's your Avatar? I swear I've seen it somewhere. I am mystified.

I'm not sure that I understand your question, if you are talking about other adventures in the GM series or in the NO series. You are allowed to bring items from, let's say, book 13 into book 19 if you want. But the Grand Master in the NO series can't use items that Lone Wolf gained in the GM series.

I looked at the covers of all the LW books and couldn't find any pockets. They must be inside the Tunic!

I meant if I pick up a special in book 13, can I bring it into book 14, or am I restricted to what's on the "allowed" list.
