I am referring to those in Shadow on the Sand, section 2--the one used to open the door leading out of the strongroom in the Zakhan's apothecary.

No, you can't. The key unlocks the doors between the Apothecary and Section 67, after which it becomes redundant. (Unless I'm wrong! )

You're not supposed to keep keys between books, since I do believe that Dever reuses key names (gold key, bronze key, silver key, copper key) and keys are only supposed to work in the book you use them in.

Except for some of the more avant garde keys, like the Blue Stone Triangle, which you find in the Caverns of Kalte but which works two books later in Shadow on the Sand. It's actually a pretty cool event, too, when you consider that you find it while in the place of the Ancients, and then use it later in the Tomb of the Majhan--both old world names for the Shianti.

Eek..thanks though. I only ask about the Gold Key because there's a keyhole that's described in almost the same way as the one in the apothecary in Kazan-Oud--close to the floor, on a featureless door. Then I'm prompted for a Gold Key.

Yeah, that is one of the problems in the books, it would seem that their are only three types of keys in all of Magnamund!
For arguements sake, though, you can only use keys in a book that you get in that same book.

There is (at least) one problem with that rule though, and it's the Skeleton Key which can only be found in Book 7 and only be used in Book 10.

But I was slightly wrong I found - the Skeleton Key is mentioned three times; you can find it here and you can use it in the same book here, but then you can also use it a few books later here. I really don't see the connection between these two places though, so what Joe might have thought is a mystery...

Well, a skeleton key is supposed to be a key that can open any lock (generally within one house, but sometimes in multiple). It seems that perhaps Joe intended it to be a more regular special item, which could open any lock in the book, but then decided against it, and simply gave it another cameo use. It IS one of the only special item keys, most of the others are backpack items.

Oh. Here I have been playing the books for years, thinking that a skeleton key is just a skeleton-decorated ordinary key and completely unaware that it is an actual term for something like a master key. I also just realized that kamqute's question comes from the fact that the words are capitalized in Section 2 of 05SotS. Since, you can't pick up the items, they shouldn't be. Yet another issue to correct in the upcoming revision of the early LW books...

I can't remember where the skeleton key was found. I know it could be used in DoT. Was it book 8?
