A wee bit off-topic here, but has anyone read any of the Falcon series by Mark Smith & Jamie Thomson? I see there are tons of them for sale for only a few pence on Amazon and wondered about picking one up. In contrast to many other gamers I was never very fond of Way of the Tiger (nor Talisman or Samuri for FF), so am a little unsure how I may take to this. However, the futuristic setting intrigues me so I wanted to get any opinions on the series from you guys...

The one thing that struck me about Falcon on picking up the first book was the sheer amount of text. The background/scenario settings were rather well constructed, and the sections are generally quite long. The typeset is also rather small, evidence to me that the publishers had been expecting a shorter manuscript. While not particularly difficult to understand or follow, the plots seem a bit less kiddified than some gamebooks. And I'm not much of a sci-fi fan. That said, it'd be something of a gamble if you like nothing else the authors have written, though the prose is in a different style to WotT or the FF books, for obvious reasons, mostly the lack of a fantasy-setting. Hope it helps.

Thanks Outspaced, I appreciate the advice. I had a quick look over an online version at the Underdog website and can see what you mean about the font size, but it does look an intriguing concept so I've decided to take the gamble and buy a few. It's always nice to read 'new' gamebooks after all, isn't it?

Just ordered a copy of the first book on Amazon. Amidst the various sellers offering decent copies for 1p there were a couple who wanted £38. Greed!

It's very difficult to tell which book they're talking about in Amazon, as there are over a dozen copies of books listed under 4 separate "Falcon" titles, but which don't include the actual individual titles. I've had to email a couple of the sellers to find out which ones they actually have so as to not double-up. Looking forward to reading them though.

If it turns out I've screwed up and get one of the later books it won't bother me too much at this stage. Not when the books are just £3 including postage. I'm only ordering one for now anyway, and might not bother with the rest of the series.

Yep, for 1p per book it's worth the risk. I've ordered the first 2 and will probably get the third as well so I can really get into the series. We'll have to compare notes when we've both finished!
