I know it can vary widely from book to book the ability to survive in combats without mainly maxed out stats. I was wondering if people would like to have some options regarding combat, as it's also the case in some early books where you can almost skip the combat, as you are going to wipe the floor with about everyone.
I can think of a few methods that are VERY easy to implement (I like easy currently
. The basic LW combat results are strongly biased towards LW. You have to have a fairly heavy -ratio to start getting 50/50 splits on low numbers, and on high numbers you always have the advantage (as it should be). It would be trivial to slide the tables over so a 0 ratio gives equal damage for a mid (5 or 6 arb. pick one I guess) and LW takes more for 4 or less. This would not adjust any monster records, only the combat results.
You could 'dial up' the diff, and while you will still have the large ratios, you will do less damage, and they will do more (in general), For those books where you have to munchkin through, you could actualy play them with a non 9-9 initial stat roll, by 'dialing down' the diff. You could also have it set to include/not include the 'boss' fights, so you could raise the diff. for most fights, but go back to the regular table for the more challenging ones.
The purists would not have to change anything, but since you could adjust on a per book basis, you can fine tune combats to make things challenging. For something like a ladder system the different settings would be seperate, so a person with a 13-22 player could still enjoy the books, but those who play at or above normal settings could never complain about anything rankwise (people like competition, even me I'll admit
)
I have just read many threads where people complain (rightly so IMHO) about the lack of ballance in some books. This seems like a way to fix any percieved imballance on a player's side and give those underpowered kai a chance to do better in combat (the only thing changed by this idea)
